Orienteers in Other Sports

Show Profile  Michael Posted: 6 March 2006, 7:40 AM
Maybe a place to record or ask about misc performances in other sports. What led to it was...

Duncan O'Regan, 3rd under-19 in Oceania MTB Cross Country Champs. Anyone we know?

What about this guy - Mark Lawson, 2nd Mens Expert Class, Oceania MTB Champs.

Have we heard of this guy before? Surely not the Mark Lawson of O fame? If so, a new career beckons.

is that open? I know Mark is a wicked MTBer but that seems a little excessive...

Lara Prince 1st home in Avalanche Peak yet again

It's Mark alright - he is a wicked Mountain Biker. It was 2nd Mens Expert 40+ Class. Thomas Reynolds was also 7th in the Under 19s, 3rd NZer.

Those are great results by both of them and Duncan. Congrats!

Does that mean that Thomas or even Mark will be at the World Mountain Biking Champs in Rotorua?

That will be a great event to watch, although we will have to get off the couch to watch it. Unlike the Winter Olympics, Commonwealth Games and Soccer World Cup. Hmmm sport, what a year.

Thomas is hoping to be selected for the NZ Junior Worlds team for the World Champs, and with the results he has had he should be, but I don't know if there is a grade for Mark's age group at that event.

Expert class in mtb is like M21A.... There's still a whole other world of elites out there!

duncan smoked the mountain biking. He won two races this season and got second in another. He will be in da nz team for world champs for sure. under 19 is more like m17-20e than m21a. haha

This isn't really another sport, but I hear Jamie (and who?) won the Cyclic Saga. Darryl Taylor (NZ MTBO team) and Brigette Robertshawe first mixed. No results on the website yet so how about some more info from those who were there?

Show Profile  Michael Posted: 15 March 2006, 1:55 PM
Cyclic Saga results are now up on www.cyclicsaga.co.nz, although the mixed results are missing. Seems the result was close - decided on finish time? Two other teams were on the same points - Julian Cox/Jon Coakley (Julian was a MTBO regular in Wgtn before moving to Dunedin) and Dion/Justin Freeman (any relation to Martin/Christina?) Alister Metherell (PAPO pres) was in the top vets team just 20 points behind. I wonder if this closeness means the top 3 teams got all the points??

Show Profile  Jamie Posted: 16 March 2006, 3:05 AM
yep thats the story, we used about 11 1/2 of the 13 1/2 hours available. I think the next team was about 1 1/4 hours behind us.

Great event, all the controls in the right place and good route choice and strategy the key. Awesome riding to...

Anyone in the Cwealth Games who has orienteered?

Show Profile  Greg Posted: 18 March 2006, 1:37 PM
Nick Willis??

Show Profile  Neil K Posted: 18 March 2006, 1:58 PM
Stu Lynch's Sister is running the marathon tommorrow.

Show Profile  Blair Trewin Posted: 22 March 2006, 3:06 AM
Not sure if you're interested in non-NZers, but two of Australia's Commonwealth Games athletes have done at least some orienteering - Lauren Shelley (8th in the marathon) was a Summer Series regular in Melbourne before moving to WA, and Martin Dent (3000m steeple) has orienteered quite a bit in recent years, including last year's Easter - he's formidable in technically easy events (especially sprints) but further off the pace elsewhere.

Aaron, Sara and Chris, along with Marcel Hagener, 2nd in the Riad Qualifier in Western Australia...not bad against most several of the best teams in the world.
