Anyone remember Simon Beck? http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2104755/Crop-circles-Alpine-style-Artist-creates-incredible-impression-giant-patterns-snow.html

Wow - amazing work. I remember him in the early 90's when living in the UK. Previously known as Hillary Beck, he was a very handy orienteer. British team and various international races, though don't think World Champs. First memory of him is at Sorlandsgaloppen 1988 in Norway when he turned up in an Austin Maxi with only the drivers seat in place. Made the car easier to pack apparently. He did a fair bit of mapping in the UK and was frequently seen at events running in gumboots and a boilersuit. Quite a character.

Another mapper with rare talents was Australian David Miller (have I got that name right?) He did quite a bit of mapping here then dropped off the scene. Rumour had it he said he'd come back when they stopped their fetish with granite.

Can someone advise me. Who was the founder of orienteering in NZ?

I remember Dave well - you could hear him from a long way away cursing to himself in the forest - he was a bit of a character.

I remember thinking after he won Queens Birthday 3 day 1981 in the lovely MSD forest, and I was a complete novice, how could I get to be as good as him and how it would be nice if sometime in the future we could start beating the Australians (Maurice Ongania was 2nd).

Maurice was a nice chap as well - I remember going in the bus to a World Cup start in Australia how he tried to wind me and my brother up about our black O suits and wondering who's funeral we were going to.

We (2nd) did beat Maurice and Dieter Wolf (3rd) in the Tasmania Mountain Marathon but I don't think they were really trying that hard.

I wonder where Maurice is now?

Maurice moved to Italy - he was coaching the Italian junior team for a while but I'm not sure if he still is.

I've never met Dave Miller but he certainly had legendary status amongst those of a certain generation, both in orienteering and at the Bureau of Meteorology - in my first year at the Bureau I came across a group at the Christmas Party telling Dave Miller stories, and was able to add a few to the mix. Haven't heard anything of him for about 10 years though. The last I heard of him was that he'd gone running in Port Hedland with something over his face to keep the dust out and had been picked up by the police as a suspected escapee from the local immigration detention centre.

Lets include the opposites - people from long ago who came back. Robyn Galloway from Taupo's heyday. Did she represent NZ as a junior? Now Robyn Mourie and orienteering with SS age family. Parallel story, Jenny Iles was Wellington I think. Remember the Rutledges? Frances had a friend called Ocean Mercier, she's really keen now.

Matt Backler won the men's 35-39 gold, taking out the [World Cross Tri Champs] title by almost six minutes.

Sounds like Matt Backler the ex-orienteer?

Also, Stephen Leary, was living in Wanaka, at least a few years ago he was.

I think you'll find some orienteering in the CV of Kathryn and Lizzie Bunkenberg too. And I'd look into the name Orchard too, but it looks like the NZOF stats database went out with the bathwater. Bryan?

Ray and Alwine Barlow, do you live in Auckland now? And where are your kids? And thinking about the Southland diaspora, what of the Glowacki whanau (or whatever they call it in Polish)?

I saw Evan Barlow at quite a few events around London a few years ago.
