Myths About Orienteering

Show Profile  Michael Posted: 8 June 2007, 3:43 PM
They keep cropping up in my head, so here goes...

"Orienteering is a labour-intensive sport" (implication - more than others)

Orienteers only have to map the terrain, not make it. The tracks in Makara Peak MTB park have been made by volunteers. And not only that, they trap predators and plant natives there too. The supporters group has made a commitment to plant a native for every metre of track built. There's another MTB park under way on the Wainuiomata Hill too - volunteers again.

Are you trying to compare apples with oranges?

Many people making something that all can do over and over and over again is completely different to 1-2 people planning, setting, checking, placing and organising an event that they do not get to compete in themselves and it is a 1 off. A group of people can make a track in one day, it takes days to months for an orienteering event to be organised.
