Well it already has, with a couple of world championships run and multiple kiwi world champions. But like any 21yo we're gonna have a party...
Waitangi 21, marking the 21st birthday of rogaining in NZ with a weekend of rogaining. 4-6 Feb 2012, that's Waitangi long weekend next year. Around the birthplace, Wellington and the Hutt Valley.
Waitangi 21 won't be a traditional rogaine. But then rogaining wasn't traditional around here in 1991 either. We've even made traditional rogainers quake in their gaiters. The 3-hour shoestring format. The 1-hour sprint rogaine. Controls that change their value over time. Catching a bus. Accurate maps! Yikes!
Waitangi 21 will be 6 or 7 rogaines adding up to 21 hours. Lengths between 1-8 hours. Urban and rural. Day and night. Including a re-run of NZ's very first rogaine in Belmont Regional Park.
Sign up for one, sign up for the lot. It will be somewhat like a 24-hour, but without the sleep deprivation. Camping base somewhere handy to Wellington. Time between for cafes and socialising. Perhaps take part in Sevens fever. See Te Papa. Visit Aunt Mary. Whatever. But everyone should come to the Belmont finale!
Organiser Orienteering Hutt Valley. More soon.

Entries are now open for Waitangi21. Five rogaines actually, 6-7 didn't fit around the cafe breaks. Still adding up to 21 hours, the lengths range from 1 hour downtown to a 7-hour bush overnighter. Something for everyone, including endurance junkies. Camping base at the picturesque seaside suburb of Eastbourne.

More details about the timings of the five rogaines and the areas have been posted. This will give you a taste of the varied terrain types that course planners Greg, Rob, Jason, Gordon and Michael have for you. And also the schedule if you want to combine Waitangi21 with some other activities such as the Wellington Sevens. http://waitangi21.ohv.org.nz and head into "What's New" or "Nitty Gritty".
Rogaines 4 and 5 can be done on mountainbikes if you prefer; in a departure from MTBO rules you can drop your bike, adding an extra level of decision-making.

9 teams have signed up for NZ's first multi-stage rogaine. Some have chosen to do the last two stages on mountainbikes. Many others have chosen to do one or more of the five component rogaines which showcase the spectacular terrain close to Wellington. Entry list on http://waitangi21.ohv.org.nz

Darkness has fallen on the Eastbourne bush with rogainers an hour into the 3rd and longest rogaine of Waitangi21. Teams split equally north and south from the start in the beach suburb, heading for various routes into the steep beech forest. The leading teams look like aiming to visit all controls before the finish at 3am tomorrow but the normal result is generally short of intention.
Leading the multi-stage rogaine after 1 and 3-hr events on the hills of Wellington are Erin Baker and Pete Swanson, who have top-equal-scored on both; sharing the honours with Liam Drew/Barryn Westfield on Mt Vic, and with Yvette Baker on Mt Kaukau. The former world orienteering champion was given special dispensation to run solo on the close-to-city areas, and she praised the quality of the 1:20,000 map.

Baker and Swanson were 7min late this morning and have slipped to 3rd place on the leaderboard. Top place in the bush went to NZ Womens rogaine champions Debbie Mansfield and Julie Gordon, who move into second ranking in spite of missing the first short stage. They were closely followed by Liam Drew and Barryn Westfield who are now in the lead.
Today's stage 4 at Battle Hill can be done either on foot or mountainbike, with off-track controls making neither a clear choice.

Mountainbikers Simon Kennett and John Randal top-scored in todays rogaine ahead of runners Andy Foster and Mark Hearfield. However neither team is in contention for the series lead which is retained by Liam Drew and barryn Westfield in spite of a disappointing 78th day place. Erin Baker and Pete Swanson have overhauled Debbie Mansfield and Julie Gordon for second.
The final 4hr stage tomorrow is at Belmont Regional Park where NZ's first rogaine was held 21 years ago.

Debbie Mansfield and Julie Gordon won the final Waitangi rogaine at Belmont Regional Park today, but Erin Roberts and Pete Swanson were close enough behind to take the series. Previousl leaders Drew and Westfield finished late, and the resulting penalty pushed them back to third.
The winners were on foot while the other placegetters on mountainbikes were given 3 hours instead of 4. Kennett and Randal were the fastest riders again today, with a score only beaten by Mansfield/Gordon.

That was one hell of a weekends racing - HUGE raps to Michael and the organisers/planners for putting on an incredible set of events. Fantastic range of terrain and racing, awesome maps, and a really challenging but fun few days. Those that didnt make it missed one of the best rogaining experiences you could have. Would have been perfect training for those doing GodZone and other adventure races - where were you all??!! :-)
Thanks again Michael - great effort!!!
