I heard from a friend who is Venice today.. 22 degrees over there at the moment !
Mind you , it will be much cooler up at the event - a bit like the difference between HB temps and Turangi or National Park temps.

You must have applied for a USA Visa waiver (available online at https://esta.cbp.dhs.gov/esta/esta.html
IF YOU DONT HAVE THIS YOU WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO GET ON THE PLANE IN NAPIER.
Just so there are no surprises, can you please email the reference number to louise_ann@xtra.co.nz its about 15 characters long.
Check your passport is signed (11 were not signed when they were copied)

Overseas Money
Has your child got a Cash Passport ? This works out very well for getting money overseas. It is preloaded before leaving the country and we would suggest it is purchased in Euros. The 2nd card can be handed to an adult in case of emergency.
It could be useful to have about $20 US in their pockets, in case our flight is delayed in America.
They wont need to take Chinese currency with them, they can exchange euros at the airport for the local Chinese currency before we leave Italy.

You may want to consider your child take a Yabba Card so they can contact you as you may want. 29c per minute to a landline 54c to a mobile from Italy and Switzerland.
Airport Arrival Time
Please be at the airport in Napier by 3:30. This is deliberately half an hour BEFORE final check in.
Baggage Allowance
This is 23kg and 7kg for a cabin bag. They have reminded us that they will be very tough on this. Remember to leave weight to bring any purchases back.
A good idea for insurance purposes is to photograph everything in or beside the suitcase.
Airport/Airline Security
please read the Flysmart brochure about plastic bags. They will throw gear away that does not comply.
Conversations around the airport and plane about hijacks, bombs, terrorists etc& are treated very seriously by airline staff. Please dont even joke about it. If you are refused entry to a flight, your insurance does not cover your expenses to get home. If you are asked to leave, then one of the adults on the trip may also have to return as well. Its not worth the risk.

Beautiful place,It's high in their BIG mountains/ alps and can rain !! we had heavy showers in 2009 up in the valley there. Excellent clothing drops to get gear back from start I remember. So well organised.. You will all enjoy...

Surely you can communicate with the team members direct and maybe some people will be interested in the results.

Nah, gotta agree with Rob on this. Totally uninterested in the housekeeping issues for the team. Just let us know how they got on and send some useful links like the competition website.

Is it not a wonder that this is a slow growing sport when we have people being so horribly blunt and critical......does it not occur to you 'morons' that there is a lot of organising to do....oh no wait, you would NEVER have taken a school team anywhere?????

Praps 'morons' is a bit strong.....but go easy eh,when people are trying to do something good for this sport...it may not be to your liking, but surely one needs to be commmended rather than condemed??

Well, if any of the above messages are either blunt or critical, or damaging to the image of the sport, it's yours Valerie. Rob was neither condeming or criticising the efforts of "tim.a". He was merely commenting on the fact that having all the team organisational matters broadcast on a public forum was really not that interesting to anyone else other than the team members. And just for the record, Rob has probably organised more group orienteering trips overseas than anyone else in NZ over the last 20+ years, including groups of school children. If anyone knows the work that goes into organising such a trip, he does, as do I. From the insights Tim has given us so far it would seem he is doing a very good job. I look forward to seeing how the team get on in their competitions - I'm just not that interested in what they are having for breakfast in 3 weeks time.
