Paul have you got your tentacles onto all the kiwis who are there? Looking at M40 it seems that a simple search for "NZL" won't bear fruit. Or whatever it is that octupi eat.

have't had time to use any oracle powers yet although Jenni must have had a good race finishing 20th in W40.
Next they'll be heading up into the alps for the long quals amongst the sspectacular and possibly distracting scenery. Who wouldn't want to be there!

Jenni is not really satisfied with 20th. I had my dead leg/back problem which most people will have heard more moaning about then they want to hear. I have been doing some stomach exercises and Viv managed a bit of a crack of my back so I can at least do half a sprint race these days, but hobbled around the second hilly half. It was fun though. Carsten came back thinking he'd probably been too defensive stopping a lot to check the small gaps and route choices but it seemed to work. We heard there was a bit of moaning from his competitors about him being a too fast old man, but he thinks that they might have the upperhand in terrain. We'll see.

Oh well I did a bit of trawling thru the A-finals of the sprint to see what I could fish up. As well as Carsten and Jenni I found Ann Scott 20th in W70. Ross Brighouse was Po.f. but dunno if that means DNF or DNS. Doesn't look all that good for the North Island. In the West Island I found Jenny Bourne 1st W55, Herman Wehner 1st M85, Tash Key 2nd W35 and Warren Key 3rd M50. And from a different angle: Dieter Wolf, of course as a Swiss he WOULD be there, but he's not running like he used to, he was 42nd in M60. (One-time coach of NZ WOC teams.) Peo Bengtsson, inveterate O-tour organiser and frequent visitor to NZ (is he related to the Wgtn OC secretary?) was 2nd M75. Ann Salisbury lived in NZ for a while (think she worked at OPC?) and she was 18th W55. Sharon Crawford (she was representing USA at WOC in her 50's) was 6th in W65.
Anyone like put the B's and C's through the net, without a country code it's a bit tedious.

I saw Ross on the way to the start and he'd pulled a muscle in the sprint qual and was going to walk today. He must have walked very fast... Today was about compass bearings and distance judgement. There was a few contour and tiny rock features but not many. There was lots of vegetation detail; clearings and scattered tree patches. But you could easily make parallel errors if you didn't use your compass. There were people wandering all over the place, kind of like oringen but with everyone lost! Tomorrow is meant to be quite different, rocky with lots of detail.

The scrums around the result board coupled with two children mean I haven't been able to check the results out for everyone today. But by the time you get up, the results will be online and Jeff will have trawled through and found them for you... Today the starts were delayed one hour because of hold ups related to the shuttle buses - it was a narrow road up and they had to wait for returning buses to come down before other buses went up. The organisers knew this but somehow it all didn't go quite according to plan. We only arrived 20 minutes after the schedule said (two hours of travelling from our accommodation: two public transport trains and then the shuttle). Carsten would have still easily made his start but it was a bit of a walk from the assembly and I guess you don't want to stress out 80 year olds into rushing...
Carsten did manage to miss his start by 6 minutes or so anyway by losing his sport ident when he was warming up. Luckily someone eventually found it and gave it to the prestart and off he went with a 6 min handicap. Also luckily, his competitors were either taking it easy or making mistakes as he still won today and increased his overall lead!
It was as promised pretty tricky but not so much more than averagely tricky Swedish terrain. It was very rocky underfoot though which made it hard to run and read your map. I had another OK run getting 4th today and am 3rd overall which I'm pretty satisfied with. I don't think I'm fit enough to do much better than that.

So Ann, Tom, Ross with a dodgy ankle, Jenni and Carsten with the forgetful nature are into the A final? Good work.
Paul I'm wondering where you stand (er, swim) on the whale issue. Bob Jones has started a "Save the Krill" campaign, if you're interested.

Ahh Sir Bob, the only thing we have in common is that neither of us like helicopters gatecrashing a peiceful days fishing up the river.
Not that I've actually had that problem, yet.
Save the Krill, Kill a Trout. They're bigger anyhow so maybe he's on the money.
