Ozzies feeling confident...
I'm getting excited already.

"Orienteering Australia has selected the team to compete at the 2009 World Games in Kaohsiung, Taiwan. The World Games is a multi-sport festival consisting of non-olympic sports. Over 4500 competitors from 100 nations will attend. Australia is one of only 21 teams competing in the Orienteering races. Futher information can be found at

The team is:
Men: Julian Dent, Simon Uppill
Women: Kathryn Ewels, Hanny Allston

The Orienteering races will be held from 17-19 July 2009. There are 3 races- Sprint, Middle Distance and a mixed relay consisting of all 4 members. With such a strong team, we have high aspirations that someone may repeat Grant Bluett's Gold Medal at the 2001 World Games in Japan.

Paul Liggins Chair of selectors"

The Russians named there team a month or so ago

The Brits have also named there team:

Team entries closed last week so we'll know the rest soon. There's only 40 men and 40 women competing. Under the patronage of the International Olympic Committee and only occurring every 4 years, it's pretty auspicious. The opening ceremony alone makes it worth going.
We've got a pretty bloody good team as well. Even with Wayne Munro's awesome media efforts I haven't seen any further announcement of the team since nationals. Maybe I'm blind, or maybe people are blinded by the 'I could give a shit' bug. C'est la vie. But for those who missed it, the NZ team that'll run down AUS and the rest is:

Darren Ashmore
Ross Morrison
Lizze Ingham
Tania Robinson

150-160 hours of TV coverage, 24-34 hours of semi-finals and finals in ALL sports sent out in global packages, satelite transmission uploaded to a global pool, and coverage by global print media. It's a pretty big event for orienteering and the IOF know it. If Paul is just getting excited now... it's gonna get better.

The team leave on Saturday for Hong Kong for some easy training with the AUS team and some of the Hong Kong orienteers. The team is amping.
I've just had a look at the athlete entries
and it's going to be awesome.

From the IOF:

'The World Games will take place next week in Kaohsiung, Chinese Taipei. You can follow the orienteers fight for The World Games victory live online. All three events will be broadcast live on this homepage:
Also online results and tracking will be available. The World Games news will appear on the IOF homepage.'

The NZ part of the team is out of here in a couple of hours. Ross is already flying/pulling faces at the flight crew on his way to meet us in Hong Kong. It all feels strangley calm and under control.

Just out of curiosity, anyone know if there's NZers in any other sports, or whether our guys are the New Zealand team?

opening ceremony done and dusted. Was all very big and impressive, definitely worth hanging around for and a buzz walking into the stadium with 40000+ people, all there to cheer just for us! We walked in with the other kiwi teams (2 sumo dudes, women's canoe polo team and a gymnast) and Haley Westenra was even there to sing us pokarekareana. Classic!
The real fun starts this afternoon and the team are ready and excited.
