Resignation of WMOC Director

Show Profile  Michael Posted: 18 October 2001, 3:13 PM
I heard a rumour (since confirmed in NZO) that John Colls, the director of
WMOC/Austrlia/2002 has resigned, due to tension between orienteering ways of
doing things and the World Masters Games organisation, of which orienteering
is a part next year.

I gather that being part of the WMG is a "political" move made by the IOF
because WMG is closely linked with the IOC, but as we have seen with the NZ
Masters Games, orienteers don't seem to get anything of value from being
part of the games setup.

It seems that in Australia, as well as paying high entry fees to support the
professional WMG administration, competitors are required to visit Melbourne
to register. Many will arrive in Bendigo from the Australian Champs in South
Australia after a two-day drive! Although free trains will be available it
seems that this device to bolster numbers at the WMG opening ceremony is a
bit of an imposition. Or maybe its a device to bolster VicRail. Now if they'd just put on free planes they might have been able to keep Ansett flying...
