Marquita is on fire in her build up to the World Mountain Bike Orienteering Champs. Her european campaign has started in Poland where she demolished the polish team in 4 races.
You can read about the Australasian successes on the Oz teams blog http://www.ozmtboteam.socialfx.net/

The latest is she had her 38th birthday on friday.
The old lady is in Poland relaxing before they hit Finland for the training next week.

If she won WMOC in 2002 how can she be 38? You still doing her dishes?

It's not polite to ask ladies their age! And any smart comments about ladies get a black mark in the book!!

The team is nearly all assembled in Joensuu with Fiona arriving today. Greg is running WMOC in Austria this week while Stu is doing some quiet training in USA before they both arrive on Friday. Model event Saturday, long qual Sunday, middle final Monday. Some really nice riding, quite technical on the single track. You are allowed to ride through the forest which can be quicker for short distances but risky for the derailleur. Mosquitos are very large but seem to have a preference for male perspiration thank goodness.

Model event today - very tricky driving as the Finns would say. Small tracks are either loose rocky stuff or loose sandy stuff, with a few logs and roots thrown in for good measure. Nice and toasty warm too with 30C at least. Long qualification tomorrow which should be interesting. The Brits have a new weapon in the women's team in the form of Heather Monro.

Assuming 60 in the long distance finals 5 kiwis are in: Marquita Gelderman, Fiona McBride, Stu Lynch, Darryl Taylor, and Michal Glowacki. Greg Barbour missed the cut and Di Michels is given as DSQ which could mean a wrong control or not finishing for a variety of reasons. No qualifications for the middle distance so all will ride this tomorrow; the long final is Wed and relay Thu. The Ozzie team blog http://www.ozmtboteam.socialfx.net/ has news and links thru to the startlists and results, but there are no sign of live updates a la JWOC...

Is it just me or do the organisers of world championships hide away the number of qualifiers in each heat who will run the final? The question everyone has is, "has xxx qualified or not?" Can't find it on the MTBO website, had the same trouble with JWOC.

Looks like results for the middle final are live, through the results link on the website.

Good one Marquita for 8th. And Michal's 27th (+17%) is also outstanding I reckon. You don't hear anything about MTBO in Norway, it would be interesting to know just how much practice he's been able to get.

Beating Heather Monro in any form of orienteering sounds like a real achievement to me! Great stuff Marquita, and Michal and the rest of the team.

Bit of discussion on Nopesport about some DSQs in the long qualification for riding thru an OOB. The event website has lost the results now (the link points to the Fin5 foot-o) so any news from someone there?
