NZ Events Calendar

The issue of NZ having no real central orienteering calendar came up at the CD Regional Forum. When I was doing the controllers clinic in Auckland, again it was discussed how this was a vital thing that we needed. Thanks to Fraser, we now have this!

The key is that each club will enter in its events. This will mean that people travelling around the country wont have to sift through numerous websites (quite often out of date as well!) to find events. Clubs only need to post events when they know they are on, and they have the ability to post them in advance and then to keep on editing and adding details as they become apparent.

Normal logins for maptalk apply, so for those who want to post events you need to sign up for maptalk forums.

What I would like to see is someone from each area becoming a "moderator" for this valuable resource, to check over event details and dates and things. What this means is that when someone adds an event, that person can edit that event as can the "moderators". For those that are interested please get in contact with me "sja13 AT waikato.ac.nz"

Keen to hear your ideas, suggestions, and anything else. At some stage in the future we will produce individual area only pages using the database of events. Enjoy

Once again, thanks fraser!

While I remember I must add this:

For multiday events, each day must be added individually. This also includes when their are two races on the same day.

It would be even better if the fields were customisable by the user. Instead of having to know to type the direct addresses as above, they could be clicked on by means of a drop down list. ie a list with all the types of O, a list with all the types of clubs etc

Region searching would be generally more useful than club. Then of course being able to submit a range of dates would also be great... especially once the list grows.

Yeah I totally agree. Region will generally be more useful than club. These links I am supplying are for those that want to add them immediately rather than wait for the links/search page to be set up.

Currently also in the process of making it so that these can be exportable to excel, for club newsletter purposes.

Some clubs have now fed data into the database, and we would very much appreciate it if other clubs could follow suit.

Links to all the pages listed above have now been added to the events page.

Let us know if you have anymore suggestions.

Can I suggest that the Wellington Clubs load their events on to the website. I'm moving there in a few days and I'd like to know where I can do orienteering.

(I know I could visit the club websites but this is far more convinient)

http://woa.wellington.net.nz/events.html has the lot.

Show Profile  PaulS Posted: 17 February 2006, 2:30 PM
So if I was talking to a friend about orienteering and he wanted to know when and where he could try it out, do I therefore need to say 'yeah its really easy to find information, unless you're going to be in Wellington. Just go to maptalk.co.nz ... but if you're in Wellington you have to go to http://woa.wellington.net.nz/events.html'. Sounds pretty strange to me. I'd rather just be able to give them one place to go.

Show Profile  onemanfanclub Posted: 20 February 2006, 7:56 AM
While I agree that the more clubs that get with the program the better the event list will be, if your hypothetical friend can't find the maptalk links page and can't find the Wellington and HV websites using that, what are their real world navigation skills going to be like?

Show Profile  mark Posted: 20 February 2006, 8:31 AM
He probably wouldn't be allowed to run anyway. Entry for Wellington events is restricted to grumpy old people only.
