Lizzie Ingham, Wellington performed very creditably to finish 8th equal in the Sprint race final on the first day of the Junior World Orienteering Championships (JWOC) in Bellinzona, Switzerland on Sunday (10 July).

Ingham and Antonia Grigorova, Bulgaria, took 21 minute 40 seconds to complete the 2.86 km course centred around the historic castle and through the picturesque narrow streets of the town. The winner Elise Egseth of Norway won in 18:46.

Ingham, a student at Samuel Marsden Collegiate, Wellington is a member of the five women, six men Silva New Zealand team.

In the men's race the only other NZ team member to qualify for the Sprint Championship Final, Ross Morrison, Hawkes Bay also performed creditably. Morrison finished 11th in a time of 20:08 on the 3.19 km course, and 2 minutes 30 behind the winner Scott Fraser of Great Britain.

Over 300 competitors from 37 countries have entered JWOC. The event runs from 11 to 17 July.

The Middle Distance championship qualification heats are being held today in Tesserete and the final tomorrow (Wednesday) in Taverna. The Long Distance championships are on Thursday 14 at Arcegno, and JWOC finishes with the
Relays on Sunday 17 at San Bernardino.

11th - that's strange - these are the results from the PostFinance Sprint website - with Ross a brilliant 10th along with Lizzies brilliant equal 9th! Best Scandinavian was 4th in the junior men, while there's 4 Anzo's in the top 10 junior men and women...Fantastic

NZ had only two places allocated in the sprint - they both did really well. ross won an awesome 5 splits, including the finish
