Entries are now open for the 2006 City Safari in Wellington. The 6/3hr rogaine allows travel on Stagecoach Wellington buses, Tranz Metro and Wellington Cablecar, on a special pass provided as part of the entry. The 15-min sprint prologue will be on the waterfront and civic centre.

Last year's winner, adventure racer Al Cross (with C2C legend Jill Westenra) says, "We'll be back to defend our title!" More info: www.citysafari.org.nz

Entries close for the 2006 City Safari on Wednesday. The event is on Sat 20 May, starting in downtown Wellington.

The Wellington terrain offers huge scope for map-sport, with twisty little streets, steps and lanes, extensive green areas within the city, and the western skyline available rising to the 445m Mt Kaukau. Not to mention some subterranean routes, he he.

The 6-hour category attracts adventure racers and serious rogainers and orienteers; the 3-hour a lot of family groups, our three-generation family is back again with a new baby since last year! Those who feel electronic punching is essential need not apply:-))

any flying money this year michael?

Show Profile  Michael Posted: 8 May 2006, 1:18 PM
No. That investment has already paid off, with NWOC and PAPO scheduling urban rogaines. This year's project is adventure-racing style tops to make the participants more noticeable.

Sounds like a great event - I wish I could make it.

All credit to Michael and others for getting a unique event like this organised and flourishing, bigger and better each year!

Nearly 100 teams totalling 220 people with a week to go. The 6hr field will be dominated by adventure racers - topped by titleholders Al Cross (Norsewear) and Jill Westenra (Kathmandu). Others who survived the Southern Traverse World AR Champs are Paul Chaplow (Port Nelson) who teams with Rob Harrow (Norsewear), and the third male in the Norsewear team Jerome Sheppard is racing with Colin Slater. Two members of Terralink Capriccio Barryn Westfield and Fanny Lariviere are in different teams, and Mark Minehan (Sierra Int) will compete with his brother Paul.

The 3hr category is largely recreational though there is a small but growing college class including five venturer teams. Last year's winners, Wellington Ridgerunner members Andy Foster and Greg Thurlow are moving up to the 6hr. Green Party candidate Paul Bruce teams with WCC councillor Celia Wade-Brown who is behind walking group "Living Streets", and the 3-generation Ross family team is back - with a new baby.

Late entries have exceeded expectation and we've had to close off at 270 people - almost twice last year. The forecast is great for tomorrow. Teams will do a 10-min prologue in Frank Kitts Park on the waterfront before starting their main events at 9:45 and 12:15,
finishing between 3 and 4pm. There are over 50 controls between the airport and the western city skyline, including ones above and below ground...

Last year's 3-hour winners Andy Foster and Greg Thurlow moved up to 6 hours this year, and beat titleholders Al Cross and Jill Westenra for the win by 100 points. They covered Johnsonville, Khandallah, Ngaio including gorge tunnel, Wilton Bush, Karori skyline, Wrights Hill, round the top of the Wildlife Sanctuary and down through the maze of streets in Aro Valley. The winners (and other teams) used the Johnsonville train on the outward leg and intended to bus back in but missed the connection. The runners-up used the bus twice and finished down the cablecar.
