Shoe Science Cascades Rogaine Reaches 375 People!

The Shoe Science Cascades Rogaine is this Saturday 2nd July 2005 and is already larger than the first of the two race series at Piha three weeks ago! At Piha there were 370 people making up 133 teams making it the largest rogaine held in New Zealand (excluding the World Rogaine Champs, held down in the Christchurch area in 2000, which had 415 people entered from around the world). For this Saturday’s Rogaine at Cascades we have 380 people confirmed so far making up 145 teams.

A rogaine involves teams of 2-5 people navigating to a series of checkpoints in a set amount of time (either 3 or 6 hours). The checkpoints are allocated different points and the winner is the person with the most points who finishes in the allocated time. Penalty points are taken off your total score for arriving back to the event centre after the allocated time. Competitors get an hour planning time before they start to try and plan the route that collects the most points in the allowed time.

The Cascades area is on the west coast of Auckland in the bush-clad Waitakere Ranges. The Cascades area forms the northern tip of the Waitakere Ranges and track conditions will be much firmer than Piha (not as much mud we promise!) and the scenery of Cascades is beautiful with large kauris, dams and waterfalls.

The top teams from Piha cannot return to defend their titles at Cascades so the race is anyone’s to take. The top orienteers are fine-tuning their training in preparation for the World Orienteering Champs in Japan at the end of the month, and the winning Team Subaru Adventure Racing are doing some training down country. Second placed at Piha “Totally Random” (Dave Crofts & Maurits Van Den Berg) could take it out but would be given some tough competition from orienteers “LawWood” (Mark Lawson & Greenwood), adventure racers “Sportzhub” (mixed team of Steve Knowles and Debbie Chambers), vet men ” Blythen and Hodgetts” (Gordon Blythen and Wayne Hodgetts) and super vets “Mark & Henry” (Mark Struthers and Henry Beex).

Likewise in the 3-hour event the top two teams from Piha are not competing and this opens up the top podium spot for grabs. “Team Fast Forward” (Guy Cory-Wright and Peter Swanson) who placed third at Piha would have to be favourites. Other in with a chance would be “Tried, True & New” (Jo Goose, Ross Freidrich and Ewart MacLucas), “North West PR” (Paul Gilkison and Roel Michels) and “Davidson/Webster” (Jim Davidson and Penny Webster).

For those that can’t make it you’ll have to wait for next week when Race Reviewer is loaded onto our website.

RaceReviewer is an application that lets you ‘replay’ your rogaine. You can use it to graphically display your teams and other teams courses. It will tell you the approximate distance you travelled and how far you climbed. RaceReviewer developer Jody Snowdon has developed the software a bit more to allow people who didn’t compete a chance to plot a course and see how this compares to the team who did race. And Lactic Turkey event Directors Shaun & Phil have had a sneak preview of Race Reviewer 3d and assessed it as “awesome!”. 3d RaceReviewer just adds another dimension to the software (excuse the pun) but it allows you to see the hills (and shows the teams slowing down at the hills) and therefore makes route choice that much clearer.

I see the Racereviewer for the Cascades Rogaine is now available. Well done Jody. And well done Phil and Shaun, 393 rogainers almost makes the NZ record:-))

Now that the LT programme goes on to other things, and the WOC team stops fundraising to actually go to WOC, why don't the Auckland clubs run some rogaines? Do you get 393 to an OY?

3D Race Reviewer for Cascades Rogaine - Lactic Turkey Events have now uploaded RaceReviewer for the Cascades Rogaine held last weekend. It now has a 3D option in both the map and the photo - it is very cool. In the 3d mode you can zoom in and swivel the view or tilt it back and forth. Or if you can't be bothered you can switch on the auto follow mode where you get a automatic helicopter view which follows you around the course!!

And for those that couldn't make the event - fear not. RaceReviewer the Armchair version allows you to enter in a course you would have taken and then replay this. It will show the distance and climb you would have taken and the points you would have scored. See if you can beat the winners from the comfort of you computer chair....without breaking a sweat
