Strategic Plan.

I have been perusing the strategic plan and would like to forward a few points for friendly non-personal, non-abusive discussion. My thoughts are based on my experiences over the last few years in hockey, cricket, volleyball and rugby clubs.

-The strategic plan states the social aspect of the sport as one of its strengths. This is not true. Orienteering does not really provide that many social opportunities to people other than "orienteering heads" (e.g. people whose idea of a social activity is discussing route choices etc).
How about some club prizegiving dinners, or maybe even after event BBQs.

-To me, the largest weakness of orienteering is accessibility. I think the majority of events in a season should be fun, park style events (possibly on week nights during daylight savings). These take hardly any organisation and I am sure you could convince a poor student like myself to organise these if you gave them the profits in payment. I think that if this approach was adopted, membership numbers would skyrocket like a skyrocket.

Out of interest, has the strategic plan been finalised?

What club do you belong to Dave? Maybe you should change club if your one hasn't had any organised social activities. I think most clubs already have these.

Aren't the "orienteering heads" the people we should be providing for??

Hmmmmmm, maybe you should just move to Auckland.

Thank you Dave for your comments.

Hey Dave, if you stayed down south instead of escaping to the north during the holidays you'd know that YOUR club runs a series of Wednesday evening park events during February and March. Oh and by the way, the Waikouaiti event on Sunday Feb 25th is a BBQ event at our place which is on the edge of the map. Or are social events only organised by those younger than crustie age!!

See you then :-)
