Preparing a race plan for orienteering...

Can anyone out there give me some ideas about how to plan for an orienteering event. Lap style races where the course is open for practise or races with known courses are easy to plan for, so its possible put together and learn a race plan prior to the actual racing. Generally, if a good solid plan is followed it often ends up with a good result.
Orienteering though is harder to plan for with the course being unknown. So, do orienteers put together and follow race plans? If so, what sort of things go into such a plan?

Would be really keen for some help with this one, in my quest to become a better orienteer!
