Team ICEBUG - Primal Quest

Show Profile  fraser Posted: 21 August 2003, 4:05 AM
For those who are interested Phil Wood's team, ICEBUG, are now over in USA preparing for the Primal Quest Link which starts on 5 September.

Hello all supporters,

The team arrived in LA to 30 degree afternoon heat and started the 500 mile, 11 hr drive to Lake Tahoe at 5pm. And arrived in Lake Tahoe to see the sunrise after 4am supermarket shopping at Truckee! The supermarket staff questioned whether Kiwis were a nocturnal bird! Craig set an ICEBUG record for driving the longest on cruise control at 65mile/hr for 46 mins.

We've rented a house in the woods, near the lake. It's main feature is the Bear proof rubbish bin at the gate- but we have yet to experience one. We are thinking of leaving the bin open so we can check one out. Apparently you run from a bear if you see one, so we'll make sure we're wearing our spiked ICEBUG shoes coz we understand they don't like chewing on metal!

So far in the last 3 days we've done:
a 50m abseil and jumar (rope ascend) which is a good work out in 35 degrees C
a 4hr gnarly mtb ride on the Tahoe Rim Trail
a 9hr, 40km forest and trail hike (tramp!)
and a mixture of morning runs in the woods behind our house.
Tomorrow we're off for a scoot on our KICKBIKES, and a mtb recky.

Thanks to our sponsors:
ICEBUG - off road running shoes for adventure
MARMOT - outdoor adventure clothing
LEPPIN - fuel for athletes
CARLISLE - racing paddles
KICKBIKE NZ - scooters for racing

Thanks, Tim Wilkins, Craig Stevens, Jill Westenra, Phil Wood

News from the states:

31st Aug 2003 Bugs in the sun
After getting used to riding on the right hand side of the road the bugs finally headed into the wilderness in search of bears, wolves, snakes and mountain lions. The treks have involved lots of off track exploration and the mountain biking some of the most amazing tracks ever!. Mile after mile of single track heaven. Temperatures have ranged from around 5 degrees overnight, getting up to around 35-38 degrees in the afternoon. Jill has made friends with the local coyotes, and Tim has still seen nothing. CHECK THE PREVIOUS GALLERY FOR NEWLY UPDATED PICTURES The race starts Friday 5th September, covering 457 miles (700km) including paddling, trekking, mountain biking, kick biking, ropes, orienteering, caving, and little sleeping or none! Race website www.subaruprimalquest.com expected winning time 5 days.

I'm not sure of the race start time, but I'm guessing early morning 6am? (12am 06.09.03 in NZ).
