ONZ Online - Updates

Show Profile  Rog Posted: 11 May 2016, 5:03 PM
NZ Routegadget
The NZ routegadget was known previously as Routechoice ( ). It has been moved to and any old address will redirect to the latest version of Routegadget being hosted by ONZ at
The old domain remains to maintain old existing links - but please do replace these with the new address. (aside: Another orienteering application has started to use the routechoice name).

There is a link to NZ's routegadget from the ONZ website under "Events" and it is listed on

ONZ Competition Calendar
The General Manager currently maintains the competition calendar in PDF format based on information provided by clubs. It is available online via the ONZ website main menu "Events > Orienteering NZ Competition Calendar" or at:

It is located at the bottom of the events listings page.

Orienteering NZ Long Term Events Calendar
The Orienteering NZ Long Term Events Calendar providing a summary of confirmed NZ major orienteering event organisers for 2016-2017. Includes 2018 onwards as an indication of allocation but not confirmed.

It is available online via the ONZ website main menu "Events > Orienteering NZ Long Term Events Calendar" or at:

It is located at the bottom of the events listings page.

ONZ Events Listings
Events are advertised by clubs through event listings on the ONZ event listings.
They can be viewed on the ONZ website – either through the side bar calendar, upcoming events list side bar, or through the main menu “Events” item. The address is:

An RSS feed of the ONZ events in a simple format is available. To find out more, refer to the ONZ main menu "Events > Events FAQ" or by visiting this url:

RSS feeds can be displayed on other websites. Many RSS readers are available to subscribe to RSS feeds content.

ONZ Members Blog Posts and ONZ news posts
Other RSS feeds from the ONZ site include an RSS of only Members Blog posts and an RSS feed of ONZ news items posted on the site.

ONZ News Posts can be submitted on the ONZ website by anyone. Before they appear on the site they are checked so there may be a delay before display on the site. News posts are intended to be similar to content you would be happy to send to your local newspaper to promote or inform people about the sport of orienteering.

Member blog posts currently go live immediately and do not go through an pre-display approval process before being published. Members blog posts are intended to be orienteering related information and contributions that are generally non-news content. Updates about what is happening in event preparations leading up to an event would be an example. Race reviews. Orienteering training tips or coaching resources. Progress reports. Orienteering related videos of interest. Sharing of orienteering related information.

The News and Blog Posts RSS feeds can be received via RSS, Facebook, Twitter, or via email in the links in the ONZ website footer:

Additional third party free services are available such as (If This Then That) and that can automatically convert that RSS feed data to other services. Let me know what you would like to see and I will check how we can assist.

ONZ publishes all ONZ News items posted on the website through the Orienteering NZ Facebook account.

Please note that Facebook uses algorithms to decide what content to display to each person – some people will not see Facebook posts made by ONZ in their feed, even if they have liked Orienteering NZ.

To increase the number of ONZ Facebook followers would cost around $15 per post (Based on a past promotional test to boost one post advertising for a Junior Development Committee member to display to ONZ Facebook followers.). If people interact with a post and share a post, it is more likely Facebook will select it to be shown to others.

The link to subscribe or update your interests is in the footer of each page on the ONZ website:

Orienteering NZ O-Club News Emails.
The separate club-specific monthly "O-Club News" e-newsletter is created by the General Manager and sent to orienteering clubs via club secretaries. It contains club management related information, updates, and requests. These emails are available online for everyone to read at:

If you would like to subscribe to receive a copy of the club only emails send a request to

ONZ News Items and Blog Posts are sent out on the @OrienteeringNZ twitter account. Interesting orienteering tweets from other people and organisations are occasionally retweeted through the account.
