A tough bush rogaine Sat 29 Nov, on the Kapiti side of the Akatarawas. 9hrs to take fill advantage of it, 6hrs you'll get some of it, 3hrs designed for families on the flat. Entries close Wed at bigtrig.ohv.org.nz

Great weather forecast for Saturday! 58 controls out there for the 6 and 9hr teams, plus another 26 in QE Park/Whareroa Farm specially for the 3hr teams. So for those with shorter legs there's plenty close to base. (And a lot of new planting and track-making to explore.) Taking late entries subject to map numbers.

(Woops forgot I already started a thread for the Big Trig:-)) Anyway the threat of early showers disappeared, the sun came out, and 40 teams disappeared in the bush. An unusual course shape with two pinch points was dictated by the terrain, but it gave access to a piece of the Akatarawas with an incredible network of previously unmapped tracks. Although the discovery of a mud-caked thumb compass deep in the course suggests we weren't the first navigators to be in there!
Locals Jamie Stewart and Caspar Harmer convincingly won the 9hr class, ahead of Claire and Alan Dobson and Dennis Wakefield from Auckland. Provisional results have Gillian and Malcolm Ingham tied in the 6hr with Tom Spencer and his mates who turned up on the day from New Plymouth! And former orienteer James Watson brought his mate Shane Wilson down from Waipuk to win the 3hr class. Prelim results have been posted at bigtrig.ohv.org.nz.
Yes there WAS a trig, it's called "Mackay" after Camp Mackay where US soldiers were stationed in WW2.
