30 kiwi riders are in Queensland preparing for the Australian MTBO Champs this weekend. The middle and long events will run near Gympie 2hrs north of Brisbane. In a practice run at last weekend's NSW Champs Marquita Gelderman won womens open both days while Pete Swanson was the mens open champion on the Saturday.

NZ riders won both open classes in the middle distance champs today. Marquita Gelderman's win was no surprise though she is being chased quite hard by Victoria's Carolyn Jackson. However Patrick Higgins' win in the mens class may be a first for NZ, ahead of Oz-resident kiwi Greg Barbour. Pat is a Brit who has been in NZ for 6 months or so, so perhaps not a official kiwi but at least not an Aussie! Other kiwi wins went to Pete Swanson (M40) and Deb Bain (W50), and close seconds to David King (M50) and Yett Gelderman (W70). Results will be on http://www.ausmtbochamps.com/

And more top performances in the long distance on Sunday. Marquita is still the dominant female rider in Australasia, but we also scored wins in W40 (Cath Heppelthwaite), W50 (Roz Clayton with Jacqui Sinclair 4sec behind), W70 (Yett Gelderman), and M40 (Greg Barbour with Pete Swanson 2nd). Other 2nd placings Nick Collins in M60 and Chris Gelderman in M70.
