2013 Katoa Po

Show Profile  Taupoite Posted: 1 July 2012, 12:48 PM
Taupo Orienteering Club will be holding the 2013 Katoa Po event on the Tukairangi area January 19th. As well as the standard 7 and 5 leg events, we will run just the last three legs as a separate relay if there is enough interest from elites and others in NZ for Oceania and Sprint the Bays. It will be to the same rules as in the 2008 when it was last run; where there must be at least one woman in each team. So the main 7 leg event competitors don't have to choose their event, their leg 5 runners will start at the same time as the elites relay.

Because we are a very small club, we won't be organising any supporting events for the weekend. Martin Peat is planning another micro-O, possibly with a maze, at one of the lakeside parks for the Saturday. However, we are keen to hear from anyone with access to their own Sport-Ident equipment who wish to organise an event at Whakaipo Bay on the Sunday.

Had a good look round the map over the weekend between the showers. There is a lot less blackberry and gorse, but still enough to need leg covering, unless you are a Morrison ;-) The forests are still very open and the winds haven't done much damage. The grass is short but all this rain could yet cause a lot of growth. Even if it is long, this shouldn't slow the runners down much.
The entry forms should go out in the near future. There will be a red legs relay for elites and the 7 person teams. With nights being so short in mid-January, we aim to have everyone in before dawn.

The entry form is now out on the CD site at the bottom of the page:

The couses are all finalised (red courses should get a great view - even see McDonalds!) and the worst of the blackberry has been nuked.
To aid night navigation through the detail, all of the maps will be done in 1:7500

Just had a quick look at the results - congrats to Counties & Taranaki, but what really caught my attention was the battle for 2nd between AK & NW over as far as I could tell the last FOUR legs. Marquita vs Jonty. Claire vs Immy. Gene vs Eskil. Matt vs Toby. Must have been a real doozy!
