LATEST: Rescue helicopters are tonight searching for a group of students from Tauranga Intermediate School who are missing in the Kaimai Ranges.

The group failed to return from an orienteering exercise during a school camp this afternoon.

The school's Board of Trustees chairperson Pippa Smith said she was confident the children and their adult supervisors would be found safe and well.

"We know that everything that can be done, is being done, and we are very grateful for that,'' Ms Smith said.

About 50 children are believed to be on the school camp however Ms Smith was unable to confirm the number missing.

She said the group of 11 and 12 year old's are from the school's bilingual unit.

Police released the name of the school to alleviate the concerns of other parents who have children attending other school camps in the area.

Ms Smith said the school's principal Brian Diver had arrived at the camp to await news of the missing students.

Search teams, a police dog and a helicopter are involved in the search.

They've been found.

An opportunity for some coaching?
