MTBO in Auckland

Show Profile  Jamie Posted: 23 August 2002, 4:05 AM
....???? well yes I think there are several that could do a sub 35...but thats irrelevant...it is simply the hard/close competition I am pointing out.

Jamie, it dissapoints me that you have lose interest in the super series so quickly. Two months with out an event and suddenly you believe it is dead. There is simply a gap in the calender. You appear to me like a two year old child rushing from one shiny toy to another as soon as another sparkle catches your eye.

I'm not sure what you expected from the super series first three events. It was never my expectation that it would convince masses of poor elite orienteers to fly all over the country without regard for the quality of the event in the first season. The super series was and is only intended to be a carrot and catalyst to encourage strong elite competition along with renewned motivation from the athletes themselves, travel subsidies from the squad fundraising activities and better promotion of the elites to the orienteering "fans".

As an organiser of the series, I'm dissapointed in what I achieved in the first few events of the series. I am dissapointed in myself but I make no apologies (not the the athletes atleast). I plans to instigate more ideas for the second half of the season. I still have great confidence that these super series events will create a much bigger profile and see the series become a success. As Fraser successfully states next years series will be better. And I hope so will the year after that.

One quiestion I guess is where is the travel subsidies weree heralded as the squads new focus on domestic competition. Well I guess we (the squad) should apply to the squad for the money. It's our money, we ultimatly decide how to spend it.

As far as the Mtb O clashing with the Canterbury Champs goes Jamie, you must realise that traditional orienteering is a sport and recreation activity. There will always be other sport and recreation events that clash with the Canterbury Champs. If the super series wants to be popular it has to be a more attractive event than these events. The Mountain Bike orienteering is the least threatning event to good orienteering.

The Mtb O and NZOF are obviously trying to get the promotion for this new form of orienteering. The fact that three elite orienteers should have to chose between the canterbury champs and the MTB O is not a huge deal to the success of the event. And I would suggest that people like Phil and Darren who will probably do the Mtb O instead of Canterbury Champs simply do not find the Canterbury Champs that inviting....and that is the problem...not the clash of dates.

"The super series was and is only intended to be a carrot"

What is the carrot then? There aren't any prizes for winning which makes the series little different to a run of the mill OY series. The main difference being that working out the points for the Super Series is far more complicated and there is the odd inbred South Islander around to hassle.

The only benefit seems to be for squad members who get travel subsidies to some of the events and when the list of people wanting to leave the squad seems bigger than the list of people wanting to be in it then it obviously isn't much of a carrot either.

I'm not at all bothered at a clash between MTBO and foot-o events, or rogaines for that matter. While there is some crossover, the purpose of developing these new disciplines is not to provide more choice for the same number of people, because that will create more WORK for the same number of people. And it's not (as the council seems to think) to act as a conduit to getting new people into traditional orienteering.

We should see all forms of mapsport (good word, that) as equally valid, and our objective to maximise the total amount of it. MTBO is getting bikers to ride with a map, the vast majority of them are wedded to their bikes. Rogaining is getting trampers and adventure sporters to navigate with a topo map over an extended period, the vast majority of them don't want to piddle around with tiny reentrants and knee-high knolls.

So you guys should decide what it is that you want to excel at, do those events, and then you can do whatever else fits in or supports that main goal.

I am absolutely shocked that the super o league hasn't taken off to being the biggest thing since internet porn in its first year.

not.

In 1979 the nzrfu created a new competition to try and encourage competition in NZ rugby. No one really cared about as it was irrelevant compared to the yearly grudge matches and the ranfurly shield. Top players were rested in some of the games and the competition appeared flawed as the strongest teams did not feature. The system used to organise the competition was so poor that in 1984 the best team which was also the ranfurly shield holder could not make it into the top tier of the competition. It is surprising the nzrfu persevered.

How is everyone enjoying the NPC?

My point (yes I do have one) is that the key is to not give up. Just because the competition sucks does not mean it always will. People won't care about it to start with. But maybe when it comes down to the last race to see who wins- the veteran six time winner 42 year old Ross Morrison vs 18 year old upstart Dave Barr Jr (no I'm not pregnant) people will start to become interested.

Give it time. Tweak it. Let it develop. Don't put it on the trash heap with the other attempts just because the Bay of Plenty won and nobody cared.

Michael???

Sorry if you have the impression that Council thinks MTBO is a good way to get people into traditional orienteering. I for one don't think that way. Delete "traditional" and I'd agree with you.

Yes Michael, "Mapsport" is a good word / name for the sport !
I use it more than "Orienteering" when describing the sport to people who dont know what its about.
I personally think any product name that instantly helps describe or brands a product is a good marketing ploy.
Could we, should we, can we, change the sports name ?
Anythings possible I suppose. Nah !
I'm a dreamer.

Spring, Summer, Autumn,
"O" yeh !

Yeah but the problem is, that we don't want to have to chose between two 'mapsport' events.
I 'ran' (in ' ' marks, because there wasn't a whole lot of running going on!) in the Raggedy EPIC Rogaine last weekend and because of it I had to miss a DOC event. That effects the Orienteering Club because it lessens the amount of people that make their event
All Orienteering based events should work together by arranging timetables that allow maximum participation!

one point, Neil Kerrison is full of it, everything he touches turns to shit (look at Anderson)

also, he has been orienteering once in the south Island in the last decade, including missing the two nationals 98 and 02

good riddance to his guidance of the super series.

my poor heart breaks for him

ps, Michael Taggg is way too lovely/soppy for this forum...I can't believe a fancy boy like him could beat me in the Epic (maybe its time to retire).

Neil was round at my place a couple of weeks ago. He touched a plate, a fork, a glass and sat in an armchair. None of these things have turned to poo yet. How long do I have to wait?

You should show Micheal Tagg some respect Jamie. Maybe your too fat and slow??

Well I wasn't going to mention it... but since you bring it up, that's the second time in a row you've been beaten by Julian Maclaren & Michael Smithson, isn't it Jamie? Plus this time they had me (with a stress fracture in my back) to slow them down! It was my first run in over 2 months!!

For those that are interested, have a look at the results Link (push Raggedy EPIC). Congrates to Orienteers Chris Forne (1st) and Phil Wood (2nd)

yes, that was my conclusion as well

nevermind

Hi Chatters,
This is only about the third time I've ever looked at this forum, I'm too sensitive for all the abuse.

I was here trying to find what Rob C's website address is where his photos are as I am about to make an application for money to pay for travel to Canterbury Champs. I know a friendly pub who I'm hoping will be able to allocate around 2500 which with fares from Auckland-Christchurch being less than $200 means we should be able to get around 12 airfares. They don't have to be from Auckland of course! I was just working on that as a guide to the fares. I was going to send an email out when I knew whether I could get the money or not but I thought I should say something now seeing there's so much discussion going on about the Canterbury Champs already. And yes the Canterbury Champs are on! Carsten and I are planning the second day at Dalethore which is a really good map, probably the most relevant to Switzerland that I've been on in New Zealand. And on the first day you can try and beat Carsten, who can go under 30 mins for 10km, in the sand dunes of Bottle Lake...

So anyway I'll keep you posted about the money. Maybe someone could email me where I oould find some good photos. I was actually planning to talk to the woman in the pub tomorrow so maybe you'll read this too late or maybe you lot are continually wired here...

I probably won't be checking here again for a while so I'd rather you emailed me if you had anything to tell me. Apart from work, tonight we've got the first event in the Night Naviataion Series, our contribution to squad fundrasing so that's keeping us busy.

By the way it's a beautiful day down/up here in Christchurch.

Are Greg B and Encarna in Auckalnd now, I guess they're not doing the Abel Tasman race this weekend? Say hi to them from me, anyone who sees them.

Show Profile  Jenni Posted: 4 September 2002, 3:53 AM
PS I just wanted to say that Dalethorpe's relevancy to Switzerland is not because it's steep! It's not particularly. Some people may have run on it 5 or 6 years ago when it was part of some series (in the days when I leived in Sweden). Since then it's improved a lot as the tree trimmings have decayed. It is rolling to steep pine forest with marshes, rock features and the opportunity for lots of route choice. The event was almost cancelled because we (PAPO) couldn't get a planner, I really wanted to run there so I didn't offer unti it got to the point where noone was going to get to run there becuase it was going to be cancelled! We wre hoping to have a sprint event or something else as well. It should be great - excellent competition and excellent terrain.

Jamie,

All you South Islanders are so full of shit about travelling to events. You may start more Orienteering courses in the other Island but you don't finish more.

Results from the AUCKLAND OY in Dargaville last weekend:

Mens
Darren Ashmore 1st (North Islander)
Micheal Adams DNF (South Islander)

Womans
Marquita Gelderman 1st (North Islander)
Rebecca Smith DNF (South Islander)

Jenni,

Is there a web site where I can get more information about the Canterbury Champs. I am interested.

Neil
