World Cup 2013

As circulated to clubs yesterday:

At the recent NZOF Council meeting, it was agreed in principle to host a round of World Cup races in conjunction with the Oceania Orienteering Championships being held in the lower North Island during January 2013.

The background to this decision is we were approached by the International Orienteering Federation to consider this possibility, and after some consideration have decided to host a round of the World Cup, although our decision will be finally confirmed at the next NZOF Council meeting on 27 November, after further work is undertaken surrounding the financial implications of hosting this event.

Notwithstanding, this represents an exciting opportunity to welcome the world's best orienteers to our country, and give our current elite orienteers a rare opportunity to compete in international races at home. More details will follow in due course, once IOF have formally accepted our application and we have fully committed to hosting the races.

Update:

Application submitted to IOF and accepted. NZ will host three races as the opening round of the World Cup in 2013, as part of the Oceania carnival. Races will be probably be two middle and one sprint. Initial meeting of a combined Oceania/World Cup organising committee to be held next week.
