MTBO: Go the Aussies

Show Profile  Michael Posted: 12 July 2010, 6:52 AM
They were generous enough to root for us in the football, now lets return the favour at the MTBO WOC/JWOC this week in Portugal. Yesterday Adrian Jackson got off to a great start by successfully defending his sprint title.

Didn't follow it live (catching up on sleep). But the coverage seems to be good at http://mtbwoc2010.fpo.pt The Australian team blog is also right up to date with comment from "AJ" there already http://ozmtboteam.socialfx.net/?ItemID=5674 The map of a town complete with what seems to be castle ruins used the foot-o sprint specs, very testing at bike speed.

Next race is the middle on Tuesday. Only the long has a qualification.

For all you cynics out there who think MTBO is too easy, have a look at the courses. This would have been one heck of a challenge at 30km/hr.

And the live coverage was vastly superior to JWOC! They even had intermediate times going up!!

Awesome result, well done Australasia ;-)

AJ has just started the middle distance: 13.5km, EWT 52min.

Show Profile  Michael Posted: 13 July 2010, 5:05 PM
AJ has posted the top time so far at R1. meanwhile Australia's #2 man Alex Randall is sitting in 4th place, with 20 riders still to finish. Australia's two women are in 18th and 20th with 10 yet to finish.

The organisers are using coveritlive.com which was the (free) service used by WorldofO to give us JWOC coverage; but the quality of the comments on it is not great; Aussies at home are using it for a bit a chit chat about the weather. We owe a lot to Jan Kochback (WoO) Christian Bobach (CBob) for last week's live coverage.

A new fastest time at R1 - Tonis Erm from Estonia, It seems too good to be true - 4 and a half min faster! But he WAS second in Sunday's sprint.

Show Profile  Michael Posted: 13 July 2010, 6:14 PM
Looks like that time for Erm was a mistake. But Samuli Saarela has beaten AJ by 3/4 of a minute. And there are maybe 3 others who could figure. The women have all finished, Aus is 25th and 27th. Randall is 15th at the moment, will certainly be top 20.

Nooo he holds onto 2nd, third was Luca Dallavalle from Italy. Courses were a bit on the long side, 20-30%, they should be closer than that.

And in the concurrent JWOC there was something wrong with the courses and there is talk on the blog of a re-run tomorrow. Haven't heard of that before, I mean who would have a spare set of courses all ready to set out? But this may be unreliable gossip, it hasn't come from the organisers.

AJ 2nd, Alex 21st, Steve 25th

From the organisers website

New Middle Distance Final for JWOC
Tuesday, 13 July 2010 16:53

Due to a course setting problem the Middle Distance Final for both JWOC classes was cancelled. In order to minimize the damage the organization decided to organize a new Middle Distance Final for JWOC.

Therefore new courses were planned using the same map of Long Distance Qualification at scale 1:15000. The event will take at the time schedule of Long Distance Qualification.

All the Aussies are thru to the long distance final. Though their better woman Melanie Simpson had a huge time (perhaps bike problems) she only had to finish as 60 out of 60 go thru. In the re-run JWOC middle the three Aussie boys finished 27, 39 and 40 in a field of 56. The final is on Friday, relay on Sat.

Woops missed one of the Aussies, only 3 or the 4 men are in. Melanie had a long time because she stopped to help a seriously injured Czech rider.

Adrian Jackson posted fastest time at R1 (just over 50%) and R2. He's opened up a gap of 4min over the second fastest at R1 (Denmark) but there's a Russian who was also very close.

Show Profile  Michael Posted: 16 July 2010, 5:09 PM
But there are 5 missing results for R1 and the blog has just said that another Russian has posted a new fastest time there, 2min faster than AJ. And there could be 4 more threats among the last starters.
