Middleton Grange from Christchurch have won the 10th Anniversary Genesis Energy Hillary Challenge beating 7 time champions New Plymouth Boys and Girls High (containing top juniors Erin Paterson and Edward Lawley) after 5 tough days of competition. Middleton Grange were easily the strongest in the 2-day rogaine component of the event that crossed the Tongariro National Park, with 82 checkpoints scattered across the Waihouhounu saddle between the Desert Rd and Whakapapa Village. Another top junior orienteer, Nick Hann impressively lead his Onslow College team (their 1st time in the event) to a strong rogaine result, lifting the team into 5th place overall and grabbing the final automatic qualifying spot for 2011.

Nice one. Wonder if (world champion) Tim Farrant did some work with his old school, or is there something in the water at Riccarton?

What a great outdoor experience for NZ secondary school teenagers. Showing this sportshub coverage at all school assemblies would I'm sure be great PR for the event, with some spin off for orienteering. With OPC's experience and marketing behind it, I can visualize this event in the future becoming a prestige sporting event on the nations secondary schools calendar.
Well done OPC.
