2010 Waitakere Eco City Challenge

On the 18th April is the 2010 Waitakere Eco City Challenge.

The Eco City Challenge is a 4 hour urban navigation challenge (rogaine) for teams of 2-5 people, taking in the extensive track network joining the parks and other green spaces of Waitakere city. And at the end of the event you end up with a great map of Waitakere City to try some new trails!

This event is for social, schools, business teams, clubs - everyone really. The event uses an amazing map that we have created and will be updating, which includes all the parks and connecting tracks that exist in Waitakere City - it's going to be great. Then, throw in the option of taking a Ritchies Bus (using the sponsored day passes that everyone gets) just makes it even more interesting. Do you wait at the bus stop for the bus which is due in 5 minutes or sneak off to get that checkpoint just down the road, and risk missing the bus?

Checkpoints may be visited in any order, with checkpoints being allocated differing points. The highest score wins. Teams may return to the event centre as many times as they like and do not have to stay out for the entire time allowed of four hours.

Penalty points are deducted from a teams overall score for a late return.

Just a reminder about this great fun event on this Sunday. The Waitakere Eco City Challenge is in it's third year and promises to be another great way to explore the park network of Waitakere. Teams of 2-5 people navigate to as many checkpoints as possible in 4 hours using foot or bus.

An event for families, corporate teams or just social teams. You decide where you'll go and for how long, with the freedom to finish anytime within the four hours.

Registration at 9am for a 10am start on Sunday 18th April.

The event centre will be at Henderson Park, off Wilsher Cres which is off Smythe Road. A good spot for parking is at Waitakere Central (the Waitakere City Council offices). Teams wanting to book a tent site for the day should contact Shaun on email at

The City Safari team wishes you all the best for Sunday, and hopes you set a new record for us to chase!

Exactly one month to the Metlink City Safari in Wellington - 16 May. First entry in from a former world orienteering champion, paired with a previous Safari winner. Classy.
