City Safari 09

Show Profile  Michael Posted: 18 March 2009, 5:36 AM
Entries opened yesterday for the Metlink City Safari on 17 May, the urban rogaine throughout Wellington with bus train cablecar and ferry:

Already the first entry has been received - "Den 'n' F", from Nelson. No doubt they'll be coming to the event by public transport...

Lactic Turkey is also doing an urban rogaine in Waitakare City on 19 April - the Eco City Challenge.

We're hoping for a grudge match between the NZ Rogaine Champs winners Phil Wood/Ross Rotherham, and the Demon de Monchy Bro's who were only 10 points behind. Already the Demon Bro's (including world #2 Dennis) have signed up.

Now to make it really interesting, we hereby offer to the male and female winners of the 2008 NZ Long Orienteering Champs (a) air fare to Wgtn (b) pick you up from the airport and billet with local participants (c) free entry. (Obviously there's some fine print incl max on the airfare, its not an open cheque sorry!)

We also expect a number of previous 6hr winning teams to be there - but not unfortunately last year's winners. Greg Thurlow and Andy Foster will be running the Milford Track that day. That's the calibre of team that we get in the Safari.

But if you can't take these guys on, you can always do as Steve Gurney did last year - make it a cafe crawl, and dress up as a herd of cows...

Woops just as well I said there was fine print. The offer applies to the M and W21E classes of the NZ Champs and I meant 2009 not 2008:-))

Some good competition in mixed teams is likely - Liam D and Rachel O versus Jamie and Penny for starters

Show Profile  Michael Posted: 31 March 2009, 4:52 AM
World Mixed Junior Champions Georgia Whitla and Tim Farrant have signed up for the Safari.

It's worth mentioning that Tim planned and ran a Safari in Christchurch while he was still at school! And he and his friends used to do "bus racing" across town to school, judging the optimum stop to transfer from an into-the-square bus to an out bus, and on the congested Riccarton Rd even managing to get off and run ahead to the bus ahead. That's strategy.

550 entrants for the Eco City Challenge in Waitakere tomorrow - a NZ record for a rogaine! Congratulations guys!

And one month to go for the original urban rogaine the Metlink City Safari in Wellington.

Ahhh, the figure above, from a usually relacticable source, is wrong. So the record of 445, from last year's Piha, stands.

Mick mentioned Liam Drew and Rachel Ockelford, they're just back from finishing 5th in the Keen adventure race. Other top mixed teams include Colin Slater and Fleur Pawsey (Fleur won C2C in 07); Al Cross, Jerry Shepherd and Jill Westenra (4-time C2C winner and "only" 2nd this year!)

They could give the open teams a go, in fact Cross and Westenra won the event outright when it was in Lower Hutt in 05, and were runners up in 06 and 07. They will be up against the demon de Monchy bro's, but unfortunately the grudge match against the current NZ rogaine champs Wood and Rotherham won't occur. However an interesting entrant yet to nominate a partner is the legendary David Rowlands from Melbourne: planner of the first world championship and winner three times since. Though now 50, with a good local companion he could be a threat; last year he and Greg Barbour were still 11th in the world! Rowlands' day job: public transport journey planning software.

With a week to go, there are 140 teams totalling 400 people.

And we've found a partner for Australian rogaine guru David Rowlands. Jamie!

Bill Edwards and Tim Wilson regained the 6-hour City Safari title in Wellington today, with a route which covered the western hills and then crossed town to high-point controls at near the airport. This placed them 40 points ahead of Australian David Rowlands running with Jamie Stewart. Adventure racers Liam Drew and Rachel Ockelford posted the same score as Jill Westenra/Al Cross/Jerry Shephard, but were given the mixed win by arriving back 4min earlier. John and Tim Robertson (Lower Hutt ) won the 3-hour category for the third year in a row.

A provisional result summary has been posted on

And not forgetting Bill and Tim win a free entry to the Winter Classic on 2 Aug, which might not have been so handy for Mr Rowlands

Show Profile  Michael Posted: 20 May 2009, 6:31 AM
Organisers under pressure got the two most important results wrong, and Rowlands/Stewart and Edwards/Wilson are actually on the same score. The David Rowlands and Jamie Stewart were in 3min earlier, and are therefore the winners. Does that Winter Classic entry come with an airfare?

The full provisional results are now on the website There are about 540 names there, but we think the meaningful number is those who took part on the day, and we'll declare that after some checking.
