Great event on two good maps - thanks CMOC! The Maramarua event was definitely better without the benefit of fences on the map - much more concentration was required rather than running flat out towards fences that you knew were there...both days were well set and great fun, so good job guys! :-)

Thanks Pete. Mark had a great win.Shows he is probably NZ fitest orienteer at the moment at the age of 43?.Other notable runs was Lise win in the W21,starting to get consistant good results now and moving along at a good speed.Even with more top women there she would have placed high. Ross Brighouse beat Dave M. and Derek m. in the M50 in his first O event of the season.Pete S clash with Paul I. in the m40 turned out to be a non event with Paul not running because of an injury. Tricia's course setting was restricted because of lack of controls. The CMOC has only 72 course controls and with the white , yellow and orange courses taking up about 33 means that a more thoughtful personal approach to each of the red courses is restricted. Certainly all red courses could have had tricker short legs if we had 10 more controls. I did recommend that CMOC finance 140 controls so the club could hold a middle and long events, ho hum. Thanks to Jenny and Carsten for supporting the event and to Hanny for turning up and running .Once the rust wore off she showed her class, but Lise had spiked them all and gained a good early lead.

I think it also showed that the average joe-bum does not want to travel to a (single)middle/long combo weekend. Just because one grade wants a middle does not mean all grades need to be a middle, and what ever happened to a middle/middle chasing start, they were great.
Wayne thats a big call on Mark with Ross,Chris and others not there (is Rob J still in Europe?), I think it showed more, how much faster you can go when thrashing it out head to head with someone else who is probably NZ fastest(foot speed) orienteer at the moment.

On Rob J - now working in perth, he's getting some very good results in this Nav Dash series, wth a win and a second place. Looks like tomorrow is the next race.

Wasn't at the event but as a casual forum reader I find the fact that the club didn't have enough controls a weak excuse for courses not been tricker? Are there not two quite large neighbouring clubs with controls? Or don't the clubs talk anymore?

Yeah Runningbeast, I agree. There were actually more than 10 spare controls available courtesy of the NW club that could have been used if that talking thing you mentioned occurred. Not sure why someone'd write a post that kinda bags their partners courses and club? From inside and outside, the events looked good. Maybe it was a full moon thing?

Be interested to see club membership numbers for the three Auckland clubs as compared to the turnout to the Auckland Club Champs. Surely the majority of club members would be a sure-un to turn up (apart from the pure summer series verions).
Maybe the timing of the nationals comes into it?

Was this a few years ago or recently?
I'd love to agree and say that there are heaps of orienteers at lactic turkey events but no - they'd be lucky to be more than 20.
We'd love to have them but they seem to stay away in droves! The majority are people new to navigation type events - we give them some basic coaching before events in a free after work indoor coaching session and then they do the event. Many love the navigational challenge and go on to try summer series or even "proper orienteering"!
