Auckland Summer Series - race 1

Show Profile  fraser Posted: 31 October 2001, 4:15 AM
Auckland Domain 30 October 2001 Summer Series 2001/2002

It's a bit nerve racking starting up the Summer Series again. There are so many
of you that we
haven't heard from or seen for 6 months and we don't know if you'll be back. You
were and that's
just great. (150 maps sold tonight) Welcome to the new Summer Series. A special
welcome too
to the newcomers tonight. We do hope you enjoyed yourselves and will be
returning to become
'old hands' as the season progresses.

Did anyone watch the new inovation for this season? That is the Park Race. After
a very
successful Aucklanfd Champs Park Race and the new Park Race at the World Champs
in
Tampere, Finland (in which Rob Jessop was placed 34th) we thought we'd like to
try it in the
Summer Series. It is simple orienteering done at very high speed. This week only
the very top
orienteers had a go but I'm sure others will have a go at subsequent events. It
was an exciting
race with quite a major order change during the 2nd circuit. There will be more
details and the
points that the elites award themselves on the webpage www.maptalk.co.nz. There
is to be
another next week, so watch out for them as they come at high speed through the
start finish
area. They will be starting about 6.15.

Sorry to those who could not find XW - if you were early in the day then you
just need to
orienteer more carefully but those later in the evening had a hard job as the
control disappeared.
We had a good look for it and this usually turns up missing controls, hiding up
a nearby tree, but
no luck tonight.

Next week we are on Mt Eden, starting at Tahaki Reserve which is on Mt Eden Rd
quite close to
the road to the summit. Look forward to seeing you there.
