Auckland Vs Wellington

There are two events on at Queen's Birthday weekend. One in Auckland, one in Wellington.

Auckland was given the rights to hold an event by the NZOF. They chose not to apply for badge status but still organise an event.

Wellington decided to offer a low key option with entries taken right up to the day of the competition and also at a much cheaper price.

The event in Wellington has persuaded a number of Wellington area people to flag the Auckland event. Should Wellington be allowed to do this?

Auckland was given the rights to the weekend and has now been undercut by Wellington. Is this setting a precedent for the future?

On the other hand Auckland did not apply for badge status and Wellington will be giving people the opportunity to orienteer during the weekend who would otherwise would have not gone to Auckland.

What does evreyone else think?

I assume South Islanders have already gone into hybernation.

From the perspective of someone who was never going to be able to go to Auckland due to University commitments and cost issues, I think that Wellington and Kapiti have done the right thing in holding a parallel event.

I feel that had Wellington not held an event over Queens Birthday, that the amount of orienteers at Aucklands event would not have increase by much at all.

With both Wellington and Hawkes Bay being large clubs, and the bulk of their members also not known for travelling far to events, it would have been stupid to not offer 3 days of orienteering in a more local area.

While I didn't hear anyone complaining about there being two events on at the same time I did hear a number of people comment on the lack of competition at both of the events.

Are we degrading the value of our competition by splitting up people and making them go to seperate events?

Growing up with a number of other juniors and always having strong competition certainly helped me to stay motivated and enjoy the races.

I see no problem with two or more events being held in different parts of the country at the same time.
However, to assist the “competitive” orienteer which event will likely draw the bulk of their peers, I would suggest A-level (badge status) should be allocated to only one of the events.
At the time of the National Championships, this should be the only event on.
I also see no reason why low key, non competition events can't be held in different parts of the country when Area Championships are on.
“get all people orienteering all the time”
