New Zealand has an over-riding edict of "participation" these days, rather than that burden of actually winning something, but hey that doesn't satisfy those that actually like competition.
Orienteering is a competitive sport so why not revert to
"one year age groups" then judging by the total number of your competitiors in the sport most of you would likely become National Champion. Everybody could rejoice in a nice NZL "pc" kind of way.
I'd really dig being M53B champion - farrrout!!!
(but don't ask me to smile for the camera)
