Middle Distance

Show Profile  Martin Posted: 20 October 2005, 3:13 PM
the 20s grade still needs to be different to 21e, otherwise there's not much point in having it is there tom

Show Profile  Jamie Posted: 21 October 2005, 3:04 AM
Why is that Martin?

I can't see wht if 20elite grades are created the couldn't run the same winning time as the elites in a middle...

Show Profile  fraser Posted: 21 October 2005, 5:18 AM
Yeah, why not just set one red course, 30min winning time for elites and probably 60min+ for other grades (more like a classic). Less course setting and everyone is happy.

We should have a tea party out there as well, just to extend the winning time for the oldies.

And when we want to exted the winning time for elites and junior grades just have a keg out on the course.

Problem solved.

Martin what the hell are you on about. Couldnt agree more Jamie and Fraser.

Take the current target winning times. M20a is set for 42 min target winning time, and generally the distance is still less than the M21e course which is aimed at 30min.

The target time is for the top NZ competitor whether they are competing at the event or not, so going by that, a top M20 couldnt be expected to do the same course as the elites in 30min.

Fraser's idea of the one course wouldn't be such a bad idea

"M20a is set for 42 min target winning time, and generally the distance is still less than the M21e course which is aimed at 30min."

Thats because most of the time Ross has run elites because he had no competition in 20's. If he had run in M20 it would have been a different story.

Perhaps even if the winning time for Elites was to be say 28mins or so, then the one course idea could be used. A bit like the Oceania Sprint where it was slightly lower guys winning time and slightly over for womans because we didnt want to have two courses. Sure that was unfair for the woman but until we get the numbers and depth it doesnt justify a seperate course at sprint level at least.

Martin you just contradicted yourself. You said you couldnt expect a M20 to run an elites course in that winning time, then you agree with fraser to have one course. Hmmmmmm

all very well quoting the first paragraph, but read the second paragraph before you quote it.

"The target time is for the top NZ competitor whether they are competing at the event or not,"

A smart course setter will set course lengths appropriate to the person they suspect will win. So if you know your top M20 is not going to be running 20's, and if you know there is a big gap to the next one then you adjust lengths. Because as a course setter you dont want to look bad by having an extremely long winning time because you had set your course to someone that you knew wasnt going to be running that course anyway. Its a bit like the climb argument, where 95% of the time planners lie about it.

those are only the rules.

as you say, implementation is often different.

I think you mean "play" martin. Dont go editing that post like you did that other after I have already commented on it.
