*my guesses are using indication of intent as a guideline as well.
*all i know is that i wouldn't want to be the one to select the team, good luck marquita and team !!

Good on ya James.

One thing: would you be interested in going for one, maybe two 12 minute races?

Show Profile  onemanfanclub Posted: 9 May 2005, 5:21 AM
If it happened to be a world champioship?

Would 100m sprinters go to the Athletics World champs for up to 4 10 second races?

And you'd be man/woman on the spot to fill in for any last minute injuries - if it was me, I'd be there!

Without having seen final trial results, my thoughts aren't too different from James, might post something once I've seen the long results. Who'd be a selector, whoever gets picked, someone's going to be disapointed!

Wish I could have a larrup at this...but prob not appropriate.

Just want to thank everyone again for the weekend, all the organisers/helpers you guys are awesome, and all my rivals/mates who make this sport worth doing.

MEN

SPRINT - Karl, Brent, Jamie
MIDDLE - Chris, Darren, Karl
LONG - Chris, Brent, Darren
RELAY - Karl, Darren, Chris

WOMEN

SPRINT - Rachael, Tania, Claire
MIDDLE - Tania, Penny, Rebecca
LONG - Rachael, Penny, Rebecca
RELAY - Tania, Rachael, Penny

* I reckon Darren should strongly be pursuaded to run long. It will be a disappointment if he doesn't - Just look at his results in the Trials and Oceania Champs(Awesome). He shouldn't be running sprint.

Otherwise - either Neil or Jamie for long.

Nic, top 100m sprinters earn megabucks. Also-ran 100m sprinters get funding from their national olympic committee to attend Olympics and World Championships.

Orienteers are largely amateur, and have to fork out significant amounts of money for the "pleasure" of running WOCs.

I don't find your comparison valid. I don't believe it is reasonable to ask/expect an amateur athlete who will probably pay a significant amount of money to go over and run one, possibly two 12 minute races.

With regard to whether you travel over for one race only. To me it isn't about the time spent racing otherwise all we'd ever want to do is 24hour races. I think the lack of enthusiasm shown by some to travel for one race is that they want more chances to succeed (and can envisage themselves making a hash of a sprint race and going home dissapointed, partly because they still believe it comes down to luck rather than skill. And also that Kiwis still don't seem to value the sprint race as much as the middle and Classic. Anyway thats my different perspective.

Show Profile  Andrew M Posted: 9 May 2005, 1:03 PM
There is a little clique of keen young orienteers round the world who have invented themselves as Sprint specialists. In New Zealand I couldn't envisage anyone taking the plunge unless there was a structured series of sprint events, ie Domestic Park Tour, in which to develop your skills to the required level. Hence I think no one would have the gumption to fork out to race in a sprint in Japan by itself.

I think your starting to see the same few people appearing at the top of the Sprint results round the world. BJ has had a few top 3 finishes, swiss chap Danial Hubbman and Mårten Boström are also pretty quick.

Karl to run first leg relay at WOC.
my 2 cents worth.

Show Profile  Greg Posted: 9 May 2005, 2:08 PM
How about picking a team Rob rather than talking more shit under a posting asking something else. (I think all 3 have valid points)

Jamie must want to go now as he is kissing enough ass

Show Profile  HeadHoncho Posted: 9 May 2005, 11:14 PM
Me talking shit?

Pot, kettle, black.

As I am part of an NZOF executive who has to endorse the selection once made, I don't think it's appropriate for me to publicly state who I think should be selected. If I did state who I think should be selected, and it turned out to be the actual team, someone like you Greg would put 2 and 2 together and get 5.

Yeah I am getting keener at the thought

But spending thousands of dollars and countless of hours fundraising for a 12 minute sprint race when I should be doing my masters seems loopy. I (like several other people) am hoping for more.

I understand your sentiments Neil, but the reality is us kiwis simply have not raced enough sprints to develop the skills prevalent at an international race. I think I have run four serious sprints in the last four years - incl a 2nd and 3rd placing at Nationals yet I consider myself a novice at this particular form of orienteering.

The other reality is anyone only running a sprint would have very limited potential to force their way into the relay team through performance.

Show Profile  onemanfanclub Posted: 10 May 2005, 10:42 AM
Ok Rob, you caught me out, typing before thinking - how dare someone do such a thing in this forum ;-)

But what I was responding to, was the implication (which you probably weren't intending) that selections should assume that nobody would go if they were just in the sprint race. I'd hope that if there was anyone clearly among the top 3 sprint orienteers, but not in any of the other disciplines that they'd at least be asked whether they'd be keen to go on that basis, before the team gets redesigned around either leaving them out, or promoting them into one of the other races. Not that I'd expect or encourage that latter option unless our hypothetical sprint specialist had a good chance of really blitzing at the world champs, but didn't want to go just for those 2 12 minute races. And yes folks, I know that's not really the situation under discussion here, check your dictionaries for "hypothetical"

Since no one else is holding back, a team which would make me happy.

.....(all edited out)

Decided I'm never going to be a selector, I keep changing my mind over the ideal team every five minutes.
