Pioneer Can't Stay Away

Simon Kennett seemingly can't stay away from the Akatarawas. The MTB pioneer started the Karapoti Classic race with his brothers in 1986. And mostly with John Randal he's dominated the Akatarawa Attack rogaine almost since it began in 2006. The pair rode the shorter 4hr option in the first one but have 6 8hr wins to their credit. In 2012 the event was rolled into Waitangi21, they were narrowly beaten in 2009, and missed the 2014 event.

While Randal is increasingly road cycling these days, Simon has entered Sunday's Ak Attack with brother Jonathan and former Makara MTB Park convenor Andrew McLellan. This year's event starts on the Kapiti side of the ranges. They'll be chased by a selection of Godzone teams and local rogainers. Bikes are no longer essential, choosing when to drop has become part of the strategy. http://www.akattack.org.nz

And he can't stop winning! Though the three guys were pushed by the mixed team of Rachel and Liam Drew and Sheila Hart. Top 100% footies were Kelvin Thiele and Marty Bayly in 4th. The weather was great. Preliminary results have been posted.
