World Masters MTBO Champs

WMMTBOC runs this week in eastern Portugal, about midway between Lisbon and Madrid. It doubles as the European Champs and the website http://mtbo15.fpo.pt/index.php/en/ doesn't have lists of the masters; but kiwis there are Chris and Yett Gelderman, Joe Sherriff and Jo Wilson. Sprint today.

Yett has a gold in the sprint! (Ahh, don't ask how many in W70:-)) But Chris mp'd and Joe and Jo were well down their fields. For Australia Carolyn Jackson won W50 (no surprises there) but also Leigh Privett in M70. Middle tomorrow.

Maps looked fun. Very hot apparently. Chris had a brain-fade and rode straight past no. 9

Masters MTBO World Series Rankings: ... 2. Yett Gelderman, NZL. Chris and Yett will ride another half-dozen ranking events in their current trip. Go Yett! Chris, if the controls were the new pay-wave type you could protest that the technology is unreliable...

Jo's turn for a DNF yesterday. The boys were so-so, including Australia's sprint winner Leigh who DNF'd. In MTBO that can be a mechanical issue as well as all the other things that can go wrong. Down-under girls are still on top, Yett and Carolyn. Rest day today, long tomorrow.

And no-one got a result in the long:-((

From the tracking for the elites the area provided great route choice, but the keeper of the masters rankings says they won't be counted due to an unknown number of people crossing high fences. (This is presumably banned on Portugal as it is in our rules). So Yett, who moved into 1= in the rankings after the middle, missed the chance to pass her main rival, who isn't riding in Portugal.

Yett has met her nemesis in the Czech MTBO 5-days, where 2 middles and a long will round out the Masters World Series. Within the W60's (and on the same course as the 50's)Byrgiel Sommer Ellis from Denmark was 6th and Yett 9th, inching ahead on points. The other two ranking events are on Sat and Sunday. http://mtbo5days.eu/index_en.php

Yett didn't manage to beat Byrgiel in the remaining races, but her times (compared to the 60's and 50's she was riding against) were pretty creditable.

Chris and Yett were joined at the Czech event by Rob Garden, Marquita Gelderman and Nick Collins. Marquita was riding elite and placing about midway, with a very good sprint just 2.5min behind. Nick had some solid results in the top 6 of M60. Rob scored a 2nd in M60 and then, well there's probably some tales to tell...
