Hillary Challenge 14

darren Posted: 11 May 2014, 6:57 AM   The Genesis Energy Hillary Challenge adventure race is on all this week at OPC Tongariro. This is the 14th year of the event and orienteers always feature prominently in the teams. Only 12 teams (4 girls/4 guys per team) 11 from New Zealand and one from Australian make it into the final each year. Day 1 and 2 involves 12 x 60min long team problem solving challenges, utilising a whole range of outdoor and teamwork skills. Day's 3 and 4 has the teams undertaking an 18hour rogaine with a compulsory dark zone when the teams must be in camp (there choice of camp) somewhere on the course. The final day is a 50km multisport race. Regular orienteers in the event this year (that I know of) are Ed Cory-wright, Sophie Harrison and Nick Smith (all PAPO and Cashmere High), Tom Spencer (New Plymouth Boys High) and Shaan Hill and Ryan Houba (NW and Whangarei Boys High).
