TONIC 2014 and JWOC Trials

Show Profile  theoman Posted: 20 December 2013, 3:38 AM
Just to formally announce that Northwest is holding the Official North Island Orienteering Championships 28th, 29th and 30th of March. The event will also incorporate the JWOC trials, with particular emphasis on athlete exposure.

The events are as follows:
Friday 28th - Sprint Distance (New Map - North Shore)
Saturday 29th - JWOC Middle Trial + Chasing Start Middle for everybody else (New Map - Riverhead)
Sunday 30th - Long Distance (New Map - Riverhead)

All the events will be on new maps. The forest events will be held in Riverhead Forest, never before used for foot orienteering. It is currently being mapped by Nick Hann, a truly great mapper with attention to detail and accuracy.

My comments on the forest are:
"If you think Auckland only has Woodhill then you are grossly mistaken. This is a beautiful pine forest, vague spur gulley with pockets of contour detail and green vegetation. The forest is generally runnable, however quite physical, quite dissimilar to the lightning fast and overused Woodhill."

This will be an event not to be missed and will be great preparation for the Nationals. Come and enjoy some awesome new maps and support our future champions of the world!

This area will be similar to the old Weiti/Stillwater map, but nowhere near as steep.

Matt has been testing courses doing approximately 7 mins per km, whereas Weiti was often 10 mins/km.

This will be a very nuetral terrain type, and if you are needing to fly, I suggest you get in soon for the cheaper flights.

That settles it. I'm off to Waiuku on Sunday to eat my greens and prepare for Riverhead.

Entries close on Friday night, do not miss out on your chance to run on a brand new map in the Auckland area, so close to the city.

Perfect opportunity to do some hard racing before the National Champs.

So all those with Ford Prefects get them revved up. Three-speed gears, perfect for traffic-lighting.
