Climber was an Orienteer

One of the climbers killed in Mt Cook National Park at the weekend was a former orienteer. Duncan Rait (36) slipped on ice after being dropped off by a helicopter to do some ski mountaineering with his brother Cameron. Deteriorating weather delayed the rescue and he died on the way back to Mt Cook Village.

Duncan had worldwide climbing and skiing experience. He was the son of Evan and Carolyn Rait of Whitby. I can't remember Duncan doing a lot of orienteering, but Evan was for many years WOC's Mapping Officer. He was an absolute perfectionist, and drew (pen and ink) the map for the 1994 World Cup. Our sympathies to Evan and Carolyn.
