MTB Rogaines

Simon Kennett and John Randal won the 8hr Ak Attack for the third time yesterday. Kennett is regarded as one of NZ's mountainbike pioneers, and both have organised multi-day unsupported MTB rides known as "brevets". The pair were 150 points ahead of adventure racers Liam Drew and Rachel Ockelford.

The event took place on both sides of the Hutt Valley with climbs up to 400m, and crossings of the Hutt River, running at nearly 9 cumecs. Results are at www.mapsport.co.nz/aka/ak2011results.htm

But the standout performance came from orienteers John and Tim Robertson (Tim 15yrs) who demolished the rest of the 4hr field by 230 points. Their scoring rate was close to that of Drew and Ockelford.

PAPO ran a MTB rogaine on the Port Hills at the weekend too.

The first Rogaines of the North West Rogaine series in Auckland are less than a month away and there are 4 MTB Rogaines and 4 foot Rogaines this year. The first are 2 days of MTB with 3 hours per day on a newly mapped Riverhead Forest
The rest of the rogaines are 90 minutes with the first foot rogaine on a new map east of Goldies Bush with a mixture of farmland and native bush.

See www.rogaineseries.co.nz for more details.

Karl Dravitsky and a couple of fast running mates won the 8 hour rogaine yesterday in Taranaki by a huge margin, got all the controls even though the course setter Simon Mosely said it would be impossible, and he knows how good Karl is.

It was part of a wonderfull adventure racing weekend which had 10 hours of mainly mtbo activities the first day including an hour plus of orienteering on Karl's farm
