A smattering of results from Saturday's Oz Middle Distance Champs: wins to Trish W60, Wayne M65, Robbie M70 pand Ian Holden M75. Yesterday's Sth Aust Long Champs still "pending".

Replace Robbie by Val and the above applies to the SA Long. Those who read "The Australian Orienteer" may recall that M60 Hugh Moore was at death's door after a tick-borne disease caught in Europe last year, pleased to see he's back to form. Trevor Sauer is another old bastard who's had a health scare and he seems to be running well too.

Wins today in the schools individuals from Laura (SG), Lauren (JG) and Tim (JB). Duncan top SB in 4th, followed by the other three guys in 5,6,7 and separated by 11 seconds!

Very physical terrain today which may have suited the NZ team

An Australian take on the schools events:

Queensland wins Australian Schools Championships
Wednesday, 29 September 2010

Queensland are the champion state in the Australian Schools Championships for the third year in a row, after two days of competition in the Mount Crawford area. They were level with Tasmania after the individual day, but pulled clear with maximum points in three of the four relays, winning the two junior classes outright and coming second to New Zealand in the senior girls.

New Zealand dominated the individual competitions on their way to taking the Southern Cross Junior Challenge (again). They won three of the four classes, through Laura and Tim Robertson (senior girls and junior boys), along with Lauren Truner (junior girls). The senior girls and junior boys were virtually NZ-Queensland head-to-head competitions, especially the senior girls where between them they filled the first seven places. Max Neumann and Jack Oakhill filled the placings in the junior boys, whilst Turner's closest opposition came from Anna Dowling (Tasmania) and Shea-Cara Hammond (ACT). Emily Cantwell (Queensland) separated Robertson and Selena Metherell in the senior girls.

The one class where New Zealand did not have things all their own way was the senior boys. Whilst their four runners all made the top seven, at the front end it was an ACT quinella through Ian Lawford and Oliver Poland. Their JWOC teammate, Kurt Neumann, was in third place.

In the relays, Queensland dominated the junior boys from start to finish. The junior girls did not have things quite as easy, but still had things well under control by the final leg. That was enough to place them in a very strong position, despite a mispunch in the senior boys. To match them Tasmania needed to put together four good results as they had the previous day, but a spirited second (holding New Zealand off in the day's best finish) in the senior boys was the best they could manage. The ACT won that race thanks to excellent runs on the last two legs from Oliver Poland and Ian Lawford, which gave them just enough points to overhaul NSW for third place overall.

Official points: Qld 45, Tas 42, ACT 34, NSW 33, Vic 22, SA 20, WA 14.
NZ were 10 points clear

Great stuff schoolies! Again!

Given what a dominant history NZ has over the Aussie National Schools team it ALMOST seems a bit unfair to also be taking on the individual state teams as well. But as they do keep inviting us...

Re Michael comments 27 sept. Hugh is getting back to form, but is still a couple of kg under weight. Still a bit rusty so expect him close to full form next season. Says he has come from near death to 92 - 82- 72 and will celebrate being 62 young soon. Lost all memory of his time in hospital (4 months) and can't remember us visiting him last Oct.
Is functioning well now.
Trevor Sauer has lost sight in his left eye after having an operation for eye cancer. Says his good eye has adjusted reasonable well and his health is good, though I notice that Meredith does all the driving.
Terry Bluett is another recoverer after having a knee operation last year. Finishes close to Hugh so expect him back to full form next year when he turns 65.
Alex Tarr as a painfull lump in his foot and only competed in The Australian Long Distance. Had the fastest first two splits and it took me half way around before I caught him after starting 2min behind. Saw him making an unlike Alex error which cost him 10 or so minutes
All great sportmen who never chuck in the towell and expect them to be around for another couple of decades for good competition
