JWOC 2010

Show Profile  Michael Posted: 9 July 2010, 3:04 AM
Alternating JWOC runners would have been given alternating maps at the start wouldn't they?

The function of the splitting loops may be different in an interval start race and a mass start like the Winter Classic. In an interval start a pair of runners coming together will probably be a faster and slower one. In the WC runners who are together will be of a similar speed. So it would take a bigger looping device to separate them - if at all!

Looping is also a nice way of usng a detailed area, I think you can get a surprising amount of course length out of a given area of map. In the Winter Classic where following and tactics are part of the flavour, I think it would be more fun to have the loops in parkland where you can run than in a remote part of the jungle where you are reduced to a scramble. Away from the leading bunch (in a relatively small event) you are actually LOOKING for other competitors rather than needing to be separated from them:-))

World of O has tempted us away from JWOC to live GPS tracking at the Finnish WOC trial. There is a very asymmetrical phi-loop there between 18 and 25. I'm not sure whether that will increase the splitting value or not - maybe its only the total length of the loop that is important.

Onemanfanclub, Hmm let me see... i think he may make some error because he's so wickedly fast, probably around 20th. But he remains number 1 in cool.

Middle Final

Results for the B Finals are showing at:
http://www.jwoc2010.dk/tempres/CLASS.HTM

Looking like almost all runners are finished.
Best kiwis are Jourdan 9th and Laura 12th.

Watching the (two different) phi-loops in action in Finland, one would have to conclude that they throw runners together as much as they split them. Although they don't appear to have given adjacent runners alternating splits, perhaps it was random. I'm "splitting" my attention though, would need to replay to really judge.

For more than you ever imagined about phi-loops and other separation methods see Separating Runners in Orienteering http://news.worldofo.com/2009/12/21/extensive-report-separating-runners-in-orienteering/ Scroll down to 'Main report' and within that scroll 48 pages of mind-numbing analysis. Also see http://news.worldofo.com/2010/02/18/dead-running-separating-method-for-the-future/ Thanks to Fraser.

Looks like a really good effort by both Scott and Matt.

Just wanted to say well done to everyone so far.

And Angela. And I would mention Emily Kemp, best non-European. Both Canada and US have produced some outstanding results over the years. And thanks to WorldofO for its live blog.

No doubt there are reasons for the poor coverage from the official JWOC website, but its hard to see why it would refer us to the WoO live blog 40 minutes after the results were finalised.

Emily was only 15 at her first JWOC, so has likely 3 more to go.
She has a pretty good set of numbers, and has made the Middle A final each year:

sprint middle long
2008 38 33 62
2009 48 24 27
2010 56 13 42

Her dad Randy Kemp was the Canadian team manager in 2008 and 2009, and I would say likely again this year.

There may not be a lot of interest out there in NZ O-land, but just in case...
I took a few pics and put them on Picasaweb for Emily last year:

Quick story from the Middle - not much news from the team in the remote wilderness of coastal Denmark.http://www.infonews.co.nz/news.cfm?id=54760 Fingers crossed for the relays starting shortly - all the best guys!!!

Fine performances by the relay teams, were we 14th country in each case? Congratulations to all including the #2 teams.

It was a pretty exciting race at the Finnish WOC trials too, live tracking with a chasing start. Crossing uncrossable rivers. And no splits.

congrats to the team for a pretty good week overall with some impressive performances in places

special congrats to angela; toby/laura in the sprint; matt/scott for getting in middle A and the relay results ... oh, and putting the convicts in their rightful place
