Chris going to Portugal again

Show Profile  Casser Posted: 6 February 2010, 5:46 AM
Check out the entries for Chris F's next orienteering race in a bit more than a weeks time in Portugal - it looks like it is going to be real cool:

There are options for picking up a few good scalps

Yep - the racing is on in the weekend - here is the website:

It looks like they have seeded the start list somehow on the second day which is a WRE in middle distance - it is really fast sand dune terrain.

Do a search thing to find Chris or just start at the bottom of the startlist where Daniel Hubmann and Theirry G is hanging out and then go backwards slightly - but not too far at all.

As you can see Chris has had a good solid race for the first race of the year in speedy sand dunes when you living in snow up to your neck or higher. Chris didn't run the first day, but will be running the next few days according to the start list.

Alistair seems to be fighting it out with a very speedy M45 dude.

Yep, lots and lots of good runners here in Portugal. My first orienteering of the season, so I am reasonable pleased with my form. My orienteering sucked today in the long distance, made about 10min worth of mistakes, but luckily went a bit better in the middle WRE yesterday. The weathers been pretty crappy, about 5 degrees, and not much sun, but fun orienteering out in the forest.

So, one more competition in the sand dunes, then its off to Norte Alentejano o meeting (about 2 hours drive from here) to have some fun in the rocky terrain.

Should be good.

Chris

Here's the map from the middle distance with a route that includes mispunch at #19 (this is not Chris's map)

Today was much more fun, mostly due to the slightly warmer weather, but I also because I had a better run in the forest. Mucked around a bit on the first few controls until no. 5 where I was caught 1 minute by Emil Wingstead. Then ran (followed) him for a few controls until the butterfly loops. After this I ran by myself but orienteered well, so ended up only finishing 2.30 behind todays winner.

The dudes have moved North as Chris mention and the website for this weekends competitions (which also includes a WRE) is:

It will be exciting to follow Chris et al in the rocks after the latest good results and cool fun at the beach. It seems to me like Chris has speedier legs early in the season this year and is orienteering quite smoothly, both things good signs for a good year.

Well, the competitions are now all finished, and its back to Trondheim tomorrow for some more snow and skiing. I was pretty pleased with all my runs, but made a big mistake right near the end of the night sprint race, otherwise I would have won , Arrrr!!! I ran up a dead end driveway that was not shown on the map (was marked as olive green area on the map), instead of the correct drive way a few meters further on, so lost about 25-30sec. Never mind, at least I feel my orienteering and running form is better than this time last year.

Hoping to do spring cup races, but depends on whether Wing OK sends a team. Otherwise some more skiing and running, for the next month or two.

Hopefully, there will be a keen NZ team to come over and visit Trondheim later this year for the world champs Otherwise have fun at all the good sounding events back in NZ.
