Waitangi - An Aussies (belated) perspective

Show Profile  leepback Posted: 31 March 2008, 5:47 PM
Hello to all my Kiwi friends.

It's a long time coming (I've been looking for somewhere to post it and then suddenly easter got in the way) but you still might be interested in my thoughts on your carnival and country (then again you might not).

Thanks once again to all those involved in planning and running this great carnival.

Might see you at Oceania in 2009

V entertaining! Note kiwis don't wear flip flops though - we wear jandals :-)

Thanks Pete s

As mentioned in my last sentence (of the blog), I'm trying to learn your wonderful language, obviously I've still quite a way to go.

"Flip-flops" must be Pommy speak? I know I've heard it somewhere.

The term flip flop is used in England and, I believe, also in the US.

BTW Jandal is a trade mark of Skellerup which introduced Jandals - J(apanese s)ANDALS - back in 1957. Since then in NZ Jandal has become synonymous with this style of footwear in a similar way that 'hoover' is used for vacuum cleaner (in the UK), 'Thermos' is used for a vacuum flask and 'Xerox' may be used for a photocopier

Show Profile  mick finn Posted: 2 April 2008, 7:57 AM
isn't esky (oz) a chilly bin over here?

Show Profile  leepback Posted: 2 April 2008, 8:04 AM
mick finn

you are correct though I may have spelt it wrong.
it is an esky (a brand name I think, much like what o'man said about hoover etc) which you call a chilly bin

My spelling is crap in any language!

Cher buzz! kiwispeak for Cool bro.
Buzz is a combination of bro (brother) and Cuzz (cousin). For some reason it is loosly used between various races... brown to brown is ok, white to brown is ok, as is brown to white, however if you use buzz between white and white perhaps brings connotations of inbreeding so is not seen to be cool at all.
Budda is another more effectionate adaption of brother, again no common blood lines pls.

I share your nose for a good forest. As well as a soft spot for a strong crisp pine forest I have developed an extreme liking to a well aged NZ Native Bush with its strong depth of leaves and berries. But for a real pick me up I can't go past a good old dry aussie Eucalypt forest when it is in full bloom. Hmmmm

Thanks for sharing your trip with us.
