Anyone know what "updated base map data" means in practical terms? The photos still have the road going into the sea near Tom99's place. Maybe it means the maps they use in Google Maps (as opposed to Google Earth)?

Latest updates: a piece of mainly sea with part of Whangaparaoa Peninsula, part Titiri Matangi Is, Rakino Is, and part Motutapu Is. And the Bombay Hills.

New coverage of what seems like the whole of Taranaki; and a swathe through Wellington and East Harbour as recently as Dec 2010! Fixes the road discontinuity near Tom99's place. Downtown Lower Hutt is still crap.

Quite a lot of new coverage of NZ, too much to list. There are some big swathes about 40km wide by 4-500km long. See it in GE here. http://mw1.google.com/mw-earth-vectordb/Imagery_Updates/imagery_updates.kml

Lower Hutt still crap. The city council says they have provided recent photography to Google but no joy. Bing has it, but there are other places where Google is newer, so worth looking in both. http://www.bing.com/maps/

I was recently caught out assuming that Google Earth automatically displays the latest imagery. Seems not, and you might have to do some fiddling with the time slider to ensure you get the latest. Example, use the search box to go to "Paraparaumu NZ" and zoom in on Queen Elizabeth Park. I get 2007 photography. But it's possible to move the time slider to the right and get 2010 imagery. I found a comment on a forum that suggests that Google makes arbitrary decisions about what is the default imagery, eg earlier photos might have less cloud. I'd rather start with the latest and look back if necessary. Anyone else met this?

Too many to list this time. Try http://google-latlong.blogspot.co.uk/2012/05/imagery-update-week-of-may-14th.html and use the links there to view them in GE. Some of them are VERY recent - eg a strip across Woodhill and Riverhead March 2012, and the Manukau Heads and Awhitu May 2012.

Something that puzzles me, GE doesn't always display the latest imagery for me. Where I suspect that there's later stuff, I can force it by fiddling with the date slider. Can anyone suggest how I can avoid this? I'm on version 6.1, almost the latest.

Latest GE newsletter says there's new high res satellite imagery for NZ. Not sure what that means in practical terms, I think that aerial imagery must be better at higher zooms. Maybe it fills in some gaps of poor coverage.

Show Profile  Michael Posted: 15 May 2013, 9:41 AM
They seem to have stopped reporting what's new, perhaps because there's so much of it! They have certainly been hard at work!

Can someone answer this question? I would think GE should display the latest imagery by default, but this is not always so. Eg just zoomed in to Lower Hutt: date 2011. Checked "Historical Imagery" in the View menu, and can get 2012. How to ensure the latest comes by default? (We can always ask for older pics if the latest is shadowy or cloudy or whatever.) It looks like Google Maps is also stuck on the photos I first get in Google Earth, in this case 2011.
